CAT4 1:48 F-8 Crusader conversion - first look
Top is the Hasegawa kit, bottom is the new CAT4 nose
I’ve always felt like the Muroc nose was too long and large for an early F-8, sadly
Early nose should be shorter than the E nose. With a pitot tube the E nose should look even longer, so I think we can be satisfied with the nose length. The early narrower profile is also obvious here
A good view of the nose profile and how different they are
The late great Tom Weinel remains the best source of knowledge for Crusaders on the web. His photos like this show how the different nose profiles compare, with much different overall shapes.
The fit here is flawed….
Probably better to line them up at the nose, and line up the intake lip. Not a huge problem imo
The only 1/48 drawing I have is from the Muroc kit instructions, but it actually lines up better than the Muroc part
It’s this that I think extends too far. Will probably need to shave it down and blend the nose some.
The manufacturer issued this correction for the nose. Hopefully it works

CAT4 coming to the rescue with what seems like a nice set of parts that can backdate the Hasegawa F-8E. While we all really want a full kit tooled by someone, getting conversion kits is the next best thing, and the ones out there are all but impossible to obtain, and none of them really capture the shape of the nose very well. Not anymore, for the moment at least. Tonight I got a good look at the nose shape of the new kit and find it compares well to reference photos. Next up is seeing how it fits on the F-8 fuselage, which means some plastic surgery.

Added some more photos comparing the kits with 1:48 F-8C scale drawings from the Muroc kit. So far I like the overall shape, but the front plate where the radome connects makes the nose a little too long overall. Might just need to shave it down and blend the shape some.
