Porsche 964 RS 3.8 WIP
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/6/0/6/313606-12266-37-720.jpg)
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/6/3/0/299630-12266-88-720.jpg)
cast-on door handles are removed..
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/6/3/1/299631-12266-18-720.jpg)
..to be replaced by spare parts/aftermarket
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/6/3/2/299632-12266-16-720.jpg)
quite some seams on the body
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/6/2/9/299629-12266-99-720.jpg)
blinker and air intakes formed to fit properly
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/6/3/3/299633-12266-46-720.jpg)
The original has two protruding "lips" on the front bumper..
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/6/3/4/299634-12266-11-720.jpg)
..which are missing in the kit...
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/6/3/5/299635-12266-16-720.jpg)
...so i built them from scratch
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/6/3/6/299636-12266-86-720.jpg)
the kit headlights do not look very good, i had a pair of spare ones from Tamiyas 911 turbo kit, after some sanding they seem to fit pretty good
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/7/0/2/299702-12266-37-720.jpg)
the wheels from the kit look pretty good, the problem is that on the rear wheel the rim bed is too shallow, the center piece must be deeper
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/7/0/3/299703-12266-88-720.jpg)
here also, kit part vs. aftermarket. No contest...
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/7/0/4/299704-12266-43-720.jpg)
combined
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/7/0/5/299705-12266-47-720.jpg)
i am very pleased with the result!!
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/7/0/6/299706-12266-18-720.jpg)
5 hours of work...fitting aftermarket wheels is quite a headache! Some scratchbuilding, cursing and several bottles of beer were required😛
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/8/6/0/299860-12266-48-720.jpg)
Let's do some body work! This gap is not supposed to be there..
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/8/6/1/299861-12266-80-720.jpg)
quite a few sink marks on the rear wing
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/8/6/2/299862-12266-15-720.jpg)
the original wing is a big, solid block, so this gap has also to go
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/8/6/3/299863-12266-20-720.jpg)
nothing incurable, you just need the right amount of putty!
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/8/6/4/299864-12266-82-720.jpg)
this will pe a pain in the a$$ to sand :/
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/8/6/5/299865-12266-84-720.jpg)
thanks to 2k polyester putty it is dry after just 30 mins!
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/8/6/6/299866-12266-56-720.jpg)
I actually tried something different this time, i added some polyester resin to the putty to make it softer and better moldable and what do you know...it works!
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/8/6/7/299867-12266-80-720.jpg)
i am very pleased with the result so far. I need to do another go with the putty here and there but i think it's gonna be good.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/9/7/9/299979-12266-44-720.jpg)
this is what it's going to look like...
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/9/8/0/299980-12266-24-720.jpg)
meanwhile first paint job is done
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/9/8/1/299981-12266-32-720.jpg)
The rims look promising! I used Model Master Aluminium..
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/7/5/6/300756-12266-28-720.jpg)
there is no full engine replica in this kit, all the details are cast-on on the chassis, nothing you can't solve with some paint and a little dry brushing...
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/7/5/7/300757-12266-69-720.jpg)
more putty
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/7/5/8/300758-12266-74-720.jpg)
that looks better
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/7/5/9/300759-12266-39-720.jpg)
time for some filler-primer, at this stage it is necessary to use some thick product because there are some small holes and air bubbles in the putty you can't prevent.
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/7/6/0/300760-12266-24-720.jpg)
i use Revells Email Basic. It is a very good product, dries very fast and overall i made good experience with it
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/7/6/1/300761-12266-94-720.jpg)
the window part is not a source of delight also, it is pretty thick and foggy. I keep the windshield, the side windows all will be made from scrath out of 0,2mm Polystyrol sheet
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/7/6/2/300762-12266-20-720.jpg)
the rear window will also be replaced because there is a hole for the wiper which does not belong on there. Unfortunately you can's just seal it up with putty..
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/7/6/3/300763-12266-76-720.jpg)
worked on some small parts also and the interior
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/7/6/4/300764-12266-85-720.jpg)
the bodywork is almost done, after smoothing out the filler primer, the basecoat is waiting
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/4/8/7/302487-12266-16-720.jpg)
Happy New Year eveyone! Finally the bulk of holidays is over, time to return to the workbench!
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/4/8/8/302488-12266-63-720.jpg)
After smoothing the filler-primer it is time for the basecoat. I use Tamiyas "Fine Surface Primer" White is the colour of choice because the yellow basepaint is not 100% opaque, grey primers would make the paint look dull
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/4/8/9/302489-12266-39-720.jpg)
..speaking of the paint, it finally arrived! It is custom mixed Porsche Yellow by Lechler, the same brand which is used by Zero Paints. I will use this with a 2K Clearcote
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/4/9/0/302490-12266-59-720.jpg)
After the basecoat is dried i smoothed the last scratches and irregularities with 2000 grid paper and rescribed some missing gaps on the body
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/4/9/1/302491-12266-15-720.jpg)
i recreate some parts of the interior by using flocking powder. It looks messy yet, but wait for it!
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/9/7/4/302974-12266-84-720.jpg)
it's getting colourful!
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/9/7/5/302975-12266-72-720.jpg)
there are some dust inclusions, but nothing you can't cure with some fine wet sanding and polishing
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/9/7/6/302976-12266-25-720.jpg)
while the paint sets i worked on the interior, the flocking adds a very realistic touch to the model!
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/3/9/9/303399-12266-14-720.jpg)
couldn't resist, was eager to know how the yellow would look with the rims..😄
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/4/0/0/303400-12266-68-720.jpg)
verdict: amazing 😛. The paint still has to cure a few days before i can proceed with sanding and polishing..
![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/8/2/3/303823-12266-55-720.jpg)
..aaaand I screwed up :/ the sunroof does not belong on this version.
![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/8/2/4/303824-12266-99-720.jpg)
I am glad i noticed it at this stage and not when the model is almost finished!
![Album image #47 Album image #47](/albums/img/8/2/5/303825-12266-14-720.jpg)
some putty...
![Album image #48 Album image #48](/albums/img/8/2/6/303826-12266-78-720.jpg)
...and yellow colored filler will do the trick
![Album image #49 Album image #49](/albums/img/9/2/3/305923-12266-98-720.jpg)
The problem with painting a high gloss finish at home without a professional spray cabin, you will always end up with dust particles in your paint. Furthermore the clear gloss has sunken in after drying for a few days and all the solvents evaporated..
![Album image #50 Album image #50](/albums/img/9/2/4/305924-12266-35-720.jpg)
..so the next step is crucial to make your paint job look really good, smooth and shiny. I wet sanded the surface with 2000 grid paper and 4000 grid soft pad...
![Album image #51 Album image #51](/albums/img/9/2/5/305925-12266-72-720.jpg)
..and polished the surface with Tamiyas polishing compounds and a soft cotton cloth
![Album image #52 Album image #52](/albums/img/9/2/6/305926-12266-46-720.jpg)
It is tideous work...
![Album image #53 Album image #53](/albums/img/9/2/7/305927-12266-28-720.jpg)
..you have to take care at the edges, because the clear cote is very thin there..
![Album image #54 Album image #54](/albums/img/9/2/8/305928-12266-15-720.jpg)
..but in the end it is worth it!
![Album image #55 Album image #55](/albums/img/9/2/9/305929-12266-47-720.jpg)
![Album image #56 Album image #56](/albums/img/9/3/0/305930-12266-48-720.jpg)
![Album image #57 Album image #57](/albums/img/1/4/3/310143-12266-12-720.jpg)
Ok, some progress here. I had to repaint some areas because i was too eager with the polishing and polished right through to the basecoat! It took some time to repair it.
![Album image #58 Album image #58](/albums/img/1/4/4/310144-12266-25-720.jpg)
![Album image #59 Album image #59](/albums/img/1/4/5/310145-12266-61-720.jpg)
rubber and plastic parts or just black areas painted, the door, hood and other gaps darkened to obtain a more realistic look
![Album image #60 Album image #60](/albums/img/1/4/6/310146-12266-96-720.jpg)
some diamond mesh here
![Album image #61 Album image #61](/albums/img/1/4/7/310147-12266-82-720.jpg)
Scott asked what i use for polishing. After finishing my tube of tamiyas (great) coarse polishing compound (again) i searched for some alternatives and this is what i use now. It is similar to Tamiyas product and at 28€ for 1KG(!) it is quite a bargain!
![Album image #62 Album image #62](/albums/img/4/5/0/310450-12266-91-720.jpg)
some progress on the bodywork. headligts are set, windshield and some other small stuff
![Album image #63 Album image #63](/albums/img/4/5/1/310451-12266-33-720.jpg)
it looks like we are getting somewhere!
![Album image #64 Album image #64](/albums/img/5/8/6/313586-12266-45-720.jpg)
Finally Finished this bad boy!

I'll make a proper presentation in daylight to do the colour justice!

That is a great paint job....and yellow can be a difficult one to spray. Nicely done

The cadmium yellow looks awesome, but I am more amazed about the flocking power that indeed gives the interior so much realism, and a nice contrast to the leather seats. Well done!

where do you buy that 3M product, looks interesting. they seem to have several others , but i have no idea what the differences are.... did you try others?

Hey Spanjaard, 3M has several products with different grades of "abrasiveness" (i hope this word exists) this particular one is the most abrasive and perfect for the first polishing step to get rid of the grinding marks from the wet sanding. For a fact, i tried several others but they were not abrasive enough for this crucial first step. But keep in mind i painted my model with a 2K clearcote which is pretty resistant and hard and this compound may be too coarse for other (1K) clear cotes. To get the surface even more shiny i used Tamiyas Finish compound (at this stage you could use any other "fine" compound). But as always in life, you should try yourself, draw your own conclusions and learn from your mistakes😢 cheers

thanks a million Alexander 🙂 i think i may give a try to one of the thinner ones, if i can find them somewhere 🙂

Now this build is bloody brilliant! I love the yellow and it somehow suits the 911 perfect.

absolutely beautiful, really fantastic result!
may i ask where do you buy the 3M Products? they seem far more expensive around here.

Spectacular!!! It actually looks BETTER than your reference photo. If you take her outside and do some forced perspective photography it will be hard to tell it is a scale model. Standing ovation!!!

Thank You, Gordon. The paint is far from perfect and i had quite a struggle with it at some places. I haven't painted a car model in a long time and have to relearn to do it properly. I'tt take it as good practice😢

It's perfect in our eyes! Painting cars this good is hard work that not everyone is capable of doing.

I wish my car had this paint finish. You did an outstanding job. Is it the car from this video on Youtube: "JP Performance - Zu Besuch im Porsche Museum | Teil 4" ?

![](/profiles/img/12266-435-s.jpg)
Thanks ice! No it's not exactly the same Porsche though it is also from the 964 series and same colour. The one in the video is a "Turbo S", it has a different spoiler/hood and additional air inlets behind the doors. Mine is a "RS 3.8".
