Hawker Siddeley Sea Harrier FRS.1 (Fujimi)
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/7/4/8/303748-10105-27-720.jpg)
Here are most of what I'll be using on this build, along with bits from the Hasegawa kit.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/7/4/9/303749-10105-57-720.jpg)
The Fujimi kit is quite similar to ESCI, although engineered differently. Look at that nasty fuselage join!
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/7/5/0/303750-10105-28-720.jpg)
The Pavla resin cockpit is designed for Airfix, and needs some mods to the front fuselage (black line).
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/7/5/1/303751-10105-91-720.jpg)
After the modifications.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/7/5/2/303752-10105-56-720.jpg)
The nose gear well has no detail at all.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/7/5/3/303753-10105-68-720.jpg)
We'll start by boxing it in.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/7/5/4/303754-10105-45-720.jpg)
Fujimi's air brake well has some nice detail.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/7/5/5/303755-10105-50-720.jpg)
Hasegawa's is blank.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/7/5/6/303756-10105-71-720.jpg)
The Hasegawa ventral fin (above) is too small. Plus, the nose is too short and has an odd upturned nature about it.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/7/5/7/303757-10105-93-720.jpg)
Harrier intake blow-in doors are open when parked. I cut this section out of the Fujimi intakes.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/7/5/8/303758-10105-14-720.jpg)
A view from behind. The inner intake wall is one piece - nice! No sanding!
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/7/5/9/303759-10105-56-720.jpg)
The Pavla cockpit painted and with the addition of some Eduard photoetch.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/7/6/0/303760-10105-81-720.jpg)
Another view.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/7/6/1/303761-10105-65-720.jpg)
And another. I'll use Eduard photoetch for the turtledeck.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/7/6/2/303762-10105-50-720.jpg)
Here is the Eduard PE in place on the turtledeck. Front fuselage assembled.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/7/6/3/303763-10105-34-720.jpg)
Need to fix the nose pitot mount - my kit had a short shot on one side.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/7/6/4/303764-10105-75-720.jpg)
Starting to build the blow-in doors with card stock.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/7/6/5/303765-10105-10-720.jpg)
Notice that the doors are different shape and size - this is accurate.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/7/6/6/303766-10105-66-720.jpg)
Fujimi outrigger wheels (left) are better detailed than Hasegawa's. I'll probably use them.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/7/6/7/303767-10105-20-720.jpg)
The front end of the Pegasus. Only the fan blades will be visible.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/7/6/8/303768-10105-63-720.jpg)
The rest of the blow-in doors in place. These are spring loaded on the real aircraft, and droop down when parked.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/7/6/9/303769-10105-20-720.jpg)
Port side.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/7/0/303770-10105-97-720.jpg)
I cut out the APU exhaust.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/7/7/1/303771-10105-51-720.jpg)
Some inauthentic detail I made for the nose gear well.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/7/7/2/303772-10105-79-720.jpg)
I used card stock to make the inner "chute" of the APU exhaust.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/7/7/3/303773-10105-20-720.jpg)
Notice how the chute angles toward starboard. The screened area to the left is the APU intake.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/7/7/4/303774-10105-83-720.jpg)
Hasegawa air brake (left) is correct; Fujimi is the longer version used on the GR.1/3. However, the Fujimi air brake well is the correct size. Go figure.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/7/7/5/303775-10105-39-720.jpg)
I trimmed the Fujimi air brake and added some Eduard PE designed for the Airfix kit.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/7/7/6/303776-10105-71-720.jpg)
Note the small bracket which will hold the air brake actuator.
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/7/7/7/303777-10105-31-720.jpg)
Photoetch lash down rings added to the outrigger wheels. Wonder how long they'll stay on?
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/7/7/8/303778-10105-37-720.jpg)
Pavla exhaust nozzles are a BIG improvement over the Fujimi versions. Even though designed for Airfix, the Pavla parts fit.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/7/7/9/303779-10105-25-720.jpg)
Hasegawa (left) have the correct size tyre on the nose gear. The Fujimi version is too small.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/7/8/0/303780-10105-58-720.jpg)
The fuselage is together and it needed a "wee" bit of filler. Yikes.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/7/8/1/303781-10105-34-720.jpg)
Don't look at the bottom, it's too disturbing.
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/7/8/2/303782-10105-65-720.jpg)
The Hasegawa gun pods fit perfectly on the Fujimi fuselage (Fujimi's don't). I drilled out the cannon and vent holes.
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/7/8/3/303783-10105-38-720.jpg)
I guess it looks better under a coat or two of white paint.
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/7/8/4/303784-10105-64-720.jpg)
Hard to see, but there are a bunch of Eduard PE vents and antennae bases on the fuselage.
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/7/8/5/303785-10105-52-720.jpg)
From the top: Hasegawa 1000 lb, Fujimi "bomb", and Fujimi 1000 lb. That last one goes to the spares box, it looks like a cluster bomb to me.
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/7/8/6/303786-10105-13-720.jpg)
Hasegawa drop tanks (above) are the correct length.
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/7/8/7/303787-10105-30-720.jpg)
Oh dear. Hasegawa refueling probe (above) is wrong in so many ways.
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/7/8/8/303788-10105-67-720.jpg)
When the bases are aligned, it obvious how bad the Hasegawa part is. Too high, wrong angle, and the base doesn't "lean forward."
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/5/4/0/307540-10105-35-720.jpg)

![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/5/4/4/307544-10105-97-720.jpg)
Sliding canopy from the Hasegawa kit - needs some additional detail inside.
![Album image #47 Album image #47](/albums/img/5/4/5/307545-10105-75-720.jpg)
Starting to scratch build the canopy detonator control box. Can you see it?

Hi mates! Sorry, I'm a bit late getting this project and album up online, as the build has been going for a couple of weeks. I'm having some fun with this one, basically taking all of the Sea Harrier FRS.1 stuff that I had in my stash and seeing if I can make a nice model out of them. Have a look at the photos and tell me if I've lost my mind or not. 🙂 🙂 🙂

a big relief to see this nice progress and detail. i like it! what do you use for filling (that red stuff)?
7 January 2017, 11:45
![](/profiles/img/10105-s.jpg)
Thanks mates! Markus, the red stuff is Nitro-Stan Red Spot and Glazing Putty. It's an automotive product. It comes in a 0.5 kg tube that lasts forever. You only need to buy one tube for your entire modelling career - unless you build a lot of kits like this one! 🙂

that putty looks like a really interesting idea... it must be possible to find it around here....

Bill, all I can say is: it`s a true gem in braillescale. As always a wonderful clean work, eyquisite workmanship is on show here!

This is some fine work so far, clean and sharp as always 👍
What is your opinion about the scale 1/72 Harrier family from Airfix?
Cheers, Christian

![](/profiles/img/10105-s.jpg)
Hi Christian, in my opinion the Airfix Sea Harrier FRS.1 and FA.2 in 1:72 scale have some shape issues especially in the front fuselage and canopy. I think the panel lies are quite heavy as well, and I could not recommend either one. However, the new tool Airfix 1:72 GR.1, GR.3 and GR.7/9 are really good kits. Not without some small problems, but they build up quite nicely.

![](/profiles/img/10792-966-s.jpg)
Thx Bill for your view about the Airfix kits. I agree about the SHAR and I thought so far to manage one. I do not know about the shape issues but I will take a look.
The GR. 1 family is quite nice, I have one in progress.
Happy modelling
Christian

Hi mates! I've posted a few more progress photos, she's looking quite sharp now that she has her stickers on. I'm leaving for a week-long holiday in Florida in just about an hour, but wanted to get this up before I leave. Cheers, Bill

Hello Bill,
you have succeeded again an unusual model. Especially remarkably I find the very small scratch built parts like the canopy detonator control box. I take off my hat, because 1/72 is one damn small scale. (In compare I build gigantic models in quarterscale ) 🙂
The colour modulation with the Seagrey is very nice also. What kind of gloss coat did you have used?
16 January 2017, 18:35
![](/profiles/img/10105-s.jpg)
The Sea Harrier project is almost done - it's down to the fiddly stuff and adding ordnance. I've posted a few more pictures that show where we are. Not long now, and then I can start the agonizing process of trying to figure out what to build next!
@Dirk, sorry I didn't answer your question earlier. The gloss coat was Future, the label actually says "Pledge Floor Care Tile & Vinyl Floor Finish with Future Shine." The marketing genius who came up with that name needs to get his coat. I think it's actually called something different now, I bought this bottle several years ago.

Finis! 🙂
The Sea Harrier FRS.1 is done and has agreed to pose for some pictures. Have a look! Cheers, Bill

The phantom and buc, are good also. I'm hoping for a good 1:48 modern mould of the British phantom. Will be interesting to see if Airfix will follow their new 1:72 scale kit with my preferred scale.

![](/profiles/img/10105-s.jpg)
Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the nice comments. The Sea Harrier has taken its place in my display cabinet and I am starting my next project - a 1:72 Canberra PR.9 in its retirement scheme. I'll create a project and get a photo album started soon. I'm torn between building the Xtrakit or Airfix kits - they both have pros and cons. Maybe I should just build them both!

This is how a SHR should look like! Very well done Bill 👍
I hope mine will look just a bit like this.

Album info
Finally I am adding a Sea Harrier to my collection of FAA aircraft. I should be using the ESCI kit since it's the best in this scale, but I already have the Fujimi and Hasegawa kits in my stash. So I will use them! The Fujimi fuselage matches the drawings much better than the Hasegawa kit, so that will be the basis for the build.
