Hi Ari, it's half painted. However the kit has hideously raised panel lines and scribing it is no real trouble. I guess I was the unlucky one, since I got one of the early batches of the kit. At some unknown point Italeri decided to reissue the kit with engraved panel lines without changing the box. Nobody knows when.
Even though I started painting the kit, after I saw how big a trouble is to wash raised panel lines on my Airfix F-16, I decided to scribe it. Not the cleanest job so far but I am training for other kits that have raised panel lines (Monogram's A-37B, Revell's F/A-18C Chippy Ho -actuall an Italeri-, Monogram's F-14A). Most of the upper surfaces are done.

I see Mathie, this job needs very delicate moves and very patience in case of errors for retrials. So newer italeri's have scribed panel lines? Nice improvement for the kit.

The last time I updated the thread, I had it painted with Molak's FS36251 and I was ready to painted the blueish grey. Since then I scribed the whole thing as the panel lines where raised and first applied the blueish grey (FS36176). I cut masks for the blueish grey areas and then applied FS36251. I think it went well, bar some overspray here and there and paint chipping off in a couple of places. Gloss varnish coming up next.

Looking very nice. I re-scribed the Monogram F-14A, it improved the looks of the kit 1000%.

Yes Lukasz and Clifford, it certainly did. It was my first attempt and it came out rather good. Clifford I have a Monogram F-14 too and will certainly rescribe it.

I don't like rescribing, but I think I have to consider that for my Sea Cobra as I already managed to sand down most of the lines anyway 😄

About 130 stencils later! I liked the TwoBobs set pretty much. Very thin film! The only small problem was that there wasn't any numbering on the decals, so it took some more effort in placing them.

Well, the instructions show you where to put the CAUTION blah blah blah, however they are so small in 1/72nd, so one has to guess what the stencil shows. The magnifying lens helped a bit but still it was a bit challenging. The easiest where the NO STEP.
Thanks Łukasz!

Panel lines done, matt varnish applied. It looks ok so far. There are places that look bad, on the undersides but it's less than average kit trying to be more than average.

Nothing to brag about... Metal areas painted with Model Master's 1403 Buffing Magnesium and then buffed with a damped in some kind of diluant cloth. It's rather dark but has a nice shine. Coyld have done better, provided I had a light shade of metal.

Thank you Cuajete!
Thank you James. I used enamels. I had a tin can of Molak FS36251, which came out extremely matt and quite rough. For the blueish gray, I used Model Master's 2036 FS36176. It sprayed great, maybe in part due to adding some levelling thinner to the mix. In the metal area I used Model Master's Magnesium Buffing. I meesed it up a bit, but I learned how to tackle it. Next time I will do much better with that.

I am still doubting whether I will use the Gunze paint or that of Mig. I also ordered a set of paint from Hakata, which I also want to test first for the correct color. The Eagles from the 70s and 80s were lighter in color than the Mod-Eagle scheme. I can sometimes be so critical for the right color ...! I am not familiar with the Model-Master paint.

Thanks Łukasz! The one thing that won't be flattering will be the metal undersides. Not my best job there but I learned a thing or two. Hopefully I will wrap it up the weekend after this one.

Dzieki Łukasz! The panel line wash was a small adventure. Vallejo's acrylic semi gloss varnish doesn't go well with oil based wash. It actually gets dissolved when the wash is applied. So I had to do a panel line wash with water dilluted Lifecolor Black. After that I spray W&N acrylic mat varnish and then I could work with oils. Pretty pleased with the result.

Yeah, Eagle time Jos!
As I was ready to glue the seats, it occured to me that having the canopy open would expose the seats to scrutiny. So I added some belts.
I scratched a rather humungus HUD.
The last addition before declaring the pit ready will be a horizontal bar used by the WSO.

Cool upgrades, the HUD may be a secret widescreen prototype, but it helps a lot - and the thin sheet you used is way better than some clear plastic slabs provided by some kits😉
Exterior looks great, almost there at the finish line!

Yeah those in the box HUD thingies are blobs of clear plastic. Usually I substitute them. It adds some eye candy, provided you don't over do it. I might cut a smaller thin plastic sheet to bring it more to reality.

Thank you Ari! Considering how I had envisioned it when I started the build many many years ago, it is something really different and much better! Praise goes to the TwoBobs decals, ultra thin and of superb quality. Recommended for any project.

The bombs were painted ages ago, well before I decided to take the kit of the shelf of doom. So it wasn't such a burden.

I am glad you like it Andy!
Thank you Spanjaard, Raphael and kengdad!
kengdad, it was a test if I can do a decent job. I have 5 or so kits that need rescribing, most of them being quarter scale ones. It turned out ok so I am confident I can do a better job on those. In general I am pushing my boundaries in each build, either in masking and painting (check my TS-11 Iskra build) or in adding bits and pieces in a cockpit (the XP-56 was a successful try).

Thank you Sukhoi242!
Unfortunately half of my models had an encounter with the cleaning lady. I managed to repair most of them, but the Eagle and the Apache took quite a beating. The canopy frame was broken and pieces of it lost together with some antennas and most importantly the arm holding the canopy in place...

WOW that's built from the PIG of a Italeri kit? GOOD JOB! I would have binned it or flogged it off and gone for the Later Hasegawa or GWH kits myself. 🙂

Thank you for your kind words Glenn!
Yes, it's that Italeri kit, not even the later issue with recessed panel lines. I wish I had the Hasegawa kit back then, but I was a teenager when I bought it and my budget was rather tight back then. I finished the kit as an adult, much more experienced and with new tools and techniques. Apart from rescribing, the TwoBobs decal sheet had the biggest effect on how the kit turned out.
