FineMolds additional kit
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/7/7/6/465776-25429-63-720.jpg)
As the main kit isn’t out yet, I started working on the extra parts in the meantime.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/0/0/2/468002-25429-59-720.jpg)
Exhaust trunks being adjusted to the Aires ones.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/6/4/0/498640-25429-74-720.jpg)
Used some Alclad II and the Mr. Paint lacquer range for the exhaust.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/8/3/9/497839-25429-12-720.jpg)
Managed to (re)spray and wash the exhaust shrouds.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/6/3/9/498639-25429-23-720.jpg)
I’m only using my phone. Too bad the subtle nuances aren’t captured by the phone’s camera...
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/6/4/1/498641-25429-45-720.jpg)
When dry a wash with Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color for the petals and AK Neutral Grey for the shrouds.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/6/4/2/498642-25429-59-720.jpg)
Although I really like the Aires exhausts, I feel the old trusty Hasegawa PE fret has nicer details on the turbine, spray ring and flame holder.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/4/5/2/476452-25429-76-720.jpg)
Finally found some modeling time again! I measured the width of the NAS Atsugi taxi track on Google Maps and cut a 1/72 variant out of plastic sheet and gave it an initial shot with Testors Light Aircraft Gray. Tomorrow more varied beige tones will follow
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/6/9/1/476691-25429-27-720.jpg)
Some subtle mottling with XF-55 and XF-57 resulted to this.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/6/9/2/476692-25429-68-720.jpg)
Yep! Like it!
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/3/9/0/466390-25429-14-720.jpg)
First wing rescribed!
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/3/9/1/466391-25429-54-720.jpg)
One to go!
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/3/9/6/466396-25429-12-720.jpg)
And this is why. In reality the lights sit flush with the wing’s skin.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/4/5/3/476453-25429-94-720.jpg)
7 parts in this picture alone! Fit is seamless!!!
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/5/5/6/496556-25429-20-720.jpg)
Tested the Mr. Paint colors I’m planning to use. Mixed in some 2K Super Clear High Gloss Varnish to instantly prepare the paint job for decals.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/5/5/7/496557-25429-43-720.jpg)
These are the USN Grey-Blue and US Dark Ghost Gray mixed with 50% white to give that bleached look. In the black primer white and blue squiggles give that beaten up look.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/5/5/8/496558-25429-32-720.jpg)
The Light Grey came out sputtering but hey, it’s a test.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/4/4/5/497445-25429-55-720.jpg)
MiG PLW Medium Grey 1601 is gonna be the chosen one wash wise.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/9/5/3/496953-25429-13-720.jpg)
Primed and marbled the flying surfaces.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/9/6/2/472962-25429-35-720.jpg)
Yesssss!!!!! Progress!!! Not much but I’m building again.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/4/6/7/478467-25429-58-720.jpg)
Cleaned up the Reskit resin wheels. Tomorrow I hopefully find some time to get them sprayed and weathered.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/4/6/8/478468-25429-62-720.jpg)
In '95 both old and new helmets were in use. To get a new helmet on the Aerobonus crew, I had to decapitate a PJ pilot...
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/7/2/497772-25429-44-720.jpg)
Tested the kit decals. A bit thick at first...
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/7/7/3/497773-25429-96-720.jpg)
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/7/7/1/497771-25429-61-720.jpg)
... but after the dull coat they blend in nicely.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/7/7/4/497774-25429-63-720.jpg)
Although I’m not that fond of the Mig Lucky Varnish. I’ll stick to the Mr. Paint when actually building.

Welcome Ekki! This evening I will start rescribing the wing navigation lights because the FineMolds ones come with a too prominent raised edge. (I'm actually starting building the FP-30 kit until the FP-32 arrives in the mail and then switch over the subassemblies) So, hopefully some more photos coming up! 😉

It has already started! would not miss this for anything. Is there any other difference between fp30 and 32, apart from the decals?

![](/profiles/img/25429-812-s.png)
I guess not as FP-30 already has the LLTV chin pod. The '95 version can be built with the early A and D parts.

Yes! It took some patience to get it across the Pacific but FP-32 landed on my doorstep today! Sunday I finally have some time to get going on this one! The decals look VERY promissing! 🙂

does the FP32 also have "beware of brast" instead of "blast"?🙂

![](/profiles/img/25429-812-s.png)
Thanks for warning me Martin! I just checked and it has "beware of brast" on it too... 🙁 I have to figure out a way to correct that as it has light grey stenciling in a dark grey rectangle.

it is sad. they really put together a nice kit and the decals are cool as well but then engrish in the instructions and on the decal sheet as well

I might have an idea how to fix it but it's difficult to explain. I'll take pictures later on to show you.

Maybe my base is a little big but apparently the taxi track at Atsugi is this wide... I wanted some extra space to show off some of the lush green grass that borders the taxi track as seen in photos as it contrasts nice with the pale gray paint schema.

At long last an update! After a month back home, I'm at my modeling desk again! It's in the high 90s here in Oklahoma, so doing stuff outside is not cutting it right now: more modeling time inside! 🙂

🙂 But living in Oklahoma right now. 30 degrees (for people not familiar with Celsius) would be freezing and I can tell you, it's definitely not!

Tomcat alert! I am in. Interesting to see your paint test, the results look promising.

Thanks! I really like the Mr. Paint range! Sprays beautifully and the colors are spot on. Now I have the time and mojo to get this bird done. 🙂
22 July 2018, 01:09
![](/profiles/img/25429-812-s.png)
Just one question though; isn't the light color too contrasting to the other two?

![](/profiles/img/25429-812-s.png)
Absolutely marvelous! The amount of detail and the ease of construction is unsurpassed! The only thing I did was adding some really thin strips of plastic card to all the front fuselage panels because in my opinion the resulting panel lines were too wide. I've seen those Tomcats built up OOB and even then the panel lines don't show up that much. Just my thing I guess...
By the way, I found out that both FP30 and FP32 hold all the parts to make about any F-14A version. The only thing missing would be the new BOL launchers and the LANTIRN, the birds had just before retirement.

I'd say the thicker lines make for a lot better result with washes. Not sure such good result will come easily on glossy hi viz for my jets though. Looking very nice on your side

![](/profiles/img/25429-812-s.png)
Thanks! I have another one planned as a hi viz gull grey and white VF-41. I'll let you know how that will work wash wise.

Today the G.W.H. kit arrived in the mail! Time to finish some other projects to get this one revamped!

Well, the pics are all jumbled, but I figured it out for the most part. LOL On board for this.

![](/profiles/img/25429-812-s.png)
Yeah, you are right. I'd better delete the FineMold ones until those parts come into play again.

That's an awesome kit Patrick, although 1/72 is not my favorite scale, I will definitely follow your project ... I love the Tomcat!

![](/profiles/img/25429-812-s.png)
Oh man Jos, this kit rivals many 1/48 scale kits in detail and finesse. Welcome aboard! As well as Clifford of course!

It said between 7 and 11 days and I think it arrived in little over a week. Pretty fast and cheaper then elsewhere.

Yesterday I fondled with the wing (couldn't resist....) and the wing has the right curvature in it! All along all the different slat, spoilers and flaps over different sprues! Amazing! And the construction pegs are Gundan sized, no worries about misalignment. 🙂
23 July 2019, 12:51
![](/profiles/img/35928-142-s.jpg)
Thats nice to hear. I am planning to use the wings for my heavy maintenance project.

Album info
First, my plan was to use the excellent FineMolds kit but after G.W.H.'s announcement of their upcoming F-14D kit I stalled this project in favor of the G.W.H. kit's option to deploy the spoilers. Now that this kit arrived, I changed the albums associated with this project.
