ESCI F-111A
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/4/5/5/512455-10501-92-720.jpg)
The loot. Some assembly had been done but otherwise the kit was complete. Decals look useable.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/4/5/3/512453-10501-71-720.jpg)
The main wheel well was rather bare so I added more detail using solder wire and scraps of plastic. Gear was already assembled.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/4/5/4/512454-10501-92-720.jpg)
Next up the intakes. These are rudimentary so I disassembled them and opened up the fuselage.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/4/5/6/512456-10501-90-720.jpg)
The thickness of the splitter plated helped in modifying it to look more like the Triple Plow I config.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/4/5/8/512458-10501-93-720.jpg)
Compressor faces from the spares bin (actually 1/32 spoked car wheel hubs so don’t look too close...). Filling seam on wing underside and cut slots to allow pushing in of wings after fuselage assembly.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/4/5/7/512457-10501-20-720.jpg)
Intake “ducting” installed
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/4/5/9/512459-10501-67-720.jpg)
Assembly of the mid fuselage. What was ESCI thinking when they engineered it like this... Probably moulding limitations. Terrible to align correctly.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/4/6/0/512460-10501-90-720.jpg)
First paint is on. Added missing consoles etc to canopy bridge.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/4/6/1/512461-10501-13-720.jpg)
Forward fuselage assembly, no problems here. Cockpit is out-of-the-box, wit only some sidewall detail added.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/4/6/2/512462-10501-91-720.jpg)
Installing the bomb bay lower panel. Kit detail is incorrect, removed hump on centerline and rescribed doors. Lots of work on this small area...
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/4/6/3/512463-10501-65-720.jpg)
Assembly of front and rear fuselage. Trying to get everything lined up correctly, kit design is not really helping here...
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/4/6/4/512464-10501-53-720.jpg)
Worked out pretty well but still needed tons of filler to smooth everything out.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/4/6/5/512465-10501-36-720.jpg)
Lots of sanding later, checking and covering scratches with Mr Surfacer. Getting there...
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/4/6/6/512466-10501-47-720.jpg)
And still to start on the upper side.. I strenghtened the wing hinge pins with copper wire to make sure the pin does not fail when I push in the wings.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/4/6/7/512467-10501-35-720.jpg)
More assembly...
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/4/6/8/512468-10501-36-720.jpg)
Filled the gap with strip...
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/4/7/0/512470-10501-23-720.jpg)
... and lots of filler needed to smooth out the local “valley”.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/4/6/9/512469-10501-31-720.jpg)
And done! This one will definitely need a good coat of primer to check the results.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/4/7/1/512471-10501-84-720.jpg)
Underside done as well.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/4/7/2/512472-10501-45-720.jpg)
Adding the tail cone. ESCI made a bit of a mess here, the tail cone angle is all wrong leaving a gap between tail cone and rudder. Fixed this by angling the tail cone up.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/4/7/3/512473-10501-24-720.jpg)
Filling the resulting gap and adding wedge to rudder to close the remaining gap.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/4/7/4/512474-10501-86-720.jpg)
Almost done
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/4/7/5/512475-10501-14-720.jpg)
Tailplane are at an angle when a/c is on ground so replaced tabs with hinge pins and filled the slots.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/4/7/6/512476-10501-62-720.jpg)
Installing the intake splitter plates. Added a small missing piece on the upper side.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/4/7/7/512477-10501-26-720.jpg)
More modication of the intakes since they are translated forward when on the ground.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/4/7/8/512478-10501-50-720.jpg)
The kit thankfully contains the ECM pods (although of rather suspect shape) but does not provide any guide in mounting them... Figured it out from photos and added mounting pins.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/4/7/9/512479-10501-44-720.jpg)
Test 1,2, .. looking good. Thinned the upper wing glove as much as possible to reduce step between wing and fuselage.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/4/8/0/512480-10501-24-720.jpg)
Can’t decide yet on swept or spread wings so to keep the options open I fashioned an insert for closing of the wing gap.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/4/8/1/512481-10501-96-720.jpg)
Wheel wells masked, ready for painting
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/4/8/2/512482-10501-18-720.jpg)
First a coat of Tamiya primer to check all the filling and sanding work. Looking good. Using a Sharpie to quickly “paint” the canopy frames black was not a good plan. It’s bleeding through...
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/4/8/3/512483-10501-24-720.jpg)
Started with the black undersurface and pre-shading of the upper surfaces. Using Vallejo Air which takes some getting used to. Once I had the thinning right it worked nicely.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/4/8/4/512484-10501-65-720.jpg)
Masking..
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/4/8/5/512485-10501-78-720.jpg)
Tan color done and more masking. This Vallejo air dries amazingly fast, you can almost start masking right after a paint session.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/4/8/7/512487-10501-10-720.jpg)
Light green done and ready for the dark green. I almost forgot the black leading edge panels and
![Album image #35 Album image #35](/albums/img/4/8/6/512486-10501-19-720.jpg)
And all colors are on. There is not as much difference between the greens as with the MM range I used before, you can hardly tell light from dark green. Hmmm.
![Album image #36 Album image #36](/albums/img/4/8/8/512488-10501-31-720.jpg)
Some retouching of the camouflage and white on gear parts etc
![Album image #37 Album image #37](/albums/img/4/8/9/512489-10501-80-720.jpg)
Assembling the jet exhausts. Fit is again not that great.
![Album image #38 Album image #38](/albums/img/4/9/1/512491-10501-94-720.jpg)
A coat of Future-ish stuff and ready for decals. And all that in a week! Feels like lightspeed to me 🙂
![Album image #39 Album image #39](/albums/img/4/9/2/512492-10501-47-720.jpg)
Decal almost complete, except for long panel on fin. Found out too late that the tail code font is wrong and the long antenna panel on the fin has a different color.
![Album image #40 Album image #40](/albums/img/4/9/0/512490-10501-37-pristine.jpg)
Creating the fin panel with decal sheet and painting the small stuff
![Album image #41 Album image #41](/albums/img/4/9/4/512494-10501-39-720.jpg)
In another case of inattention I discovered rather late that ESCI has not only provided too few but also the wrong pylons. They look Iike FB-111A pylons...
![Album image #42 Album image #42](/albums/img/4/9/3/512493-10501-48-720.jpg)
... so now I had to modify them which was luckily easy to do.
![Album image #43 Album image #43](/albums/img/4/9/5/512495-10501-78-720.jpg)
After weathering a final coat of Tamiya Flat Clear. In yet another near disaster my can ran out during the session, barely made it...
![Album image #44 Album image #44](/albums/img/4/9/6/512496-10501-16-720.jpg)
This kit is really biting me in the final stretch. Removing the masking revealed there had been a tiny seam which the primer had found. Sigh... Careful scraping, sanding and polishing saved the day.
![Album image #45 Album image #45](/albums/img/4/9/7/512497-10501-60-720.jpg)
Lining up the pylons. Sure enough a careless drop of glue on a finger found its way to the lower wing...
![Album image #46 Album image #46](/albums/img/4/9/8/512498-10501-12-720.jpg)
Final assembly, rushing to the finish line, really in the “let’s get this over with” stage by now.
![Album image #47 Album image #47](/albums/img/4/9/9/512499-10501-48-720.jpg)
Attaching ordnance...
![Album image #48 Album image #48](/albums/img/5/0/0/512500-10501-35-720.jpg)
... and were done!
![Album image #49 Album image #49](/albums/img/5/0/1/512501-10501-73-720.jpg)
I planned to have the canopy open but weaseled out of it, the temporary fit with Clearfix had a very definite feel when I started prying. Visions of more damaged paintwork made me retreat...

Hello, to stop me from going crazy in taming my Monogram B-52 I decided to tackle this little project in parallel. I had been looking for a 1/72 Vietnam War F-111A to add to my collection quite some time and earlier this year spotted an old ESCI kit on the Internet. Since it featured the subjects I was looking for I could not resist. I bought it and decided to start on it immediately.
I was aware it was not the best F-111 around but thought "hey, how hard can it be" now that I know how to deal with B-52's. Well... let's just say I was too optimistic (again... 🙁 ) and this kit has been giving me a hard time.
Conclusion: not the expected easy diversionary build but an OK-ish model, filling a gap in my collection. I did like working with the Vallejo Air range, it's pretty much foolproof although I am not so happy with the dark end result compared to the trusty old Modelmaster range I used before. Will have to figure out a solution for that for the next build...

Album info
ESCI's F-111A bought second hand, improved wheel wells, intakes and cockpit, otherwise built out-of-the-box, including the decals.
