Grazie!, all. I've toned the camo down a touch today, with a wash. I'll do a little more onto "her" and try and finish the darn thing (it's taken 3 years on and off!). Your comments are motivational and very much appreciated.

The wait is nearly over.... I'll post finals in a day or two. Thanks for your encouragement- it's oiled the wheels!

If the war had been decided on camouflage, then Mussolini would be enjoying Yorkshire puddings!

Thanks Guy and David. I'm rather proud of the interior I did too,(Eduard), alas you can't see a bloody thing!, but I'm happy it's in there! It's a great kit- now I understand how to use this forum, I'll post as I build!

Fantastic paint work. How did you paint the camo? Brush or airbrush? Masks or not?

Hello Agustin, I airbrushed the base 'sandy' (an RLM: Vallejo) and then tried to mottle with airbrush, but I felt I had better control with, and resorted to, using a brush. There was a bit too much of a contrast afterwards which I then toned down with an airbrush coat of sand, much diluted. It's all a game of trial and error- and you learn every time! Many thanks for the compliment too.

I have that one in my stash, trying to find a proper italian sand for my Sicilian camo. Yours looks really nice.

Thank-you Igor!
I think I was inclined to use an RLM for my Italian sand, once washes etc. are put over it, the shades tend to change, but I guess you start with the as-near-correct colour first. If you come to build, drop me a note and I'll remember the +/- points of the build along the way for you.

I have a same one Andy. It 's a good kit. I had problem with the fitting of cockpit glass. I putted 2 torpedoes but I know that it carried only one. I painted it with brush to have the control of camo shemes as you say too.

@Nikolaos: seen yours, lovely!! I had the same issues with the main canopy, (as hinted at here in the photos). References suggest that the undersides were aluminium and a "hellblau-like-colour". When in Rhodes, I am lead to believe it had come back from S.M.'s servicing and had a repaint, hence I spared it too much weathering.

Yes you have right for the colour. I choose the light ghost grey(gloss) because the Airfix guide has that colour and it was very easy to paint it with the brush, only one time I must change the tyres colour with rubber acrylic because they are very gloss. And of course I must make wash and smoke . I didn't dare it because I destroyed a SU-15 washing it and made a destroyed Ukranian SU-15 diorama.

I think maybe with a solid layer of say Vallejo primer paint, hand painting the camo on such a subject might look ok, then I have the impression that the colors sort of is being soaked up into the existing layer of primer, making it less of a mess, as opposed to adding paint on top of smooth plastic.

Thanks Neuling, Alberto and Oleg. This one's gone up the feed for sure, it was finished a few years back. Techniques in my studio have changed a bit, and I have a better airbrush and technique now!

Top tip Treehugger. I need to try Mr Surfacer and other ways to blend colours and even tones out, thanks for the look.

Thanks David, Vincent and Villiers, the mottled work was with a brush, and surprisingly easier as I recall than using an airbrush- it's a little harsh around the edges, but I'll live and learn!

Thanks Johne 69- Eduard PE was ok in most areas, the matrix on the upper deck behind the rear facing gun was tricky, as was the gondola interior. I didn't use some of it around the undercarriage and rear door. As I remember there is a lot of PE for this kit- so fold away!

Moreno, surely as an Italian patriot you'd want to do justice to them? Replete with exquisite camo? I drive a Giulia QV, so know the flair of the Alfa!

Hey Moreno- I love Lancia too !!! My poster car in the 1970s was the Stratos- and I saw one in a Rallye in 1978. But realistically I like Fulvias or 1750 GTVs!!

Great job Andy! I was about to ask how you managed to do those camouflage spots, but found your old comment (above) at a later point. I only used that technique once and it was a bit risky, but with decent results in the end (not as good as yours). Congrats on a wonderful model!

Thanks Marius- a little mist of brown sprayed over it helped to soften the mottles IMHO. It's all trial and error and if it looks OK to you, then it is OK

Congrats on a lovely job Andy. Such an attractive but challenging subject. I have one of these on the shelf too. It comes out from time to time, then I think about executing that camo, and I chicken out to do something easier. Spectacular result!

Thanks Neil, it is a good kit- everyone who builds it knows there is a fit issue with the cockpit transparency and the cowlings aren't right (hence a/m). It does test your brush skills, but paint -thin and often -can replicate something near to airbrushing

I have an idea for these Italian schemes. I've not tried it, but I'm thinking that an acrylic base coat then freehand oil paint camo colours on top could be feathered round the edges. One of these days, I'll do some experiments!

Haha Andy. Or a disaster.. who knows? We'll have to find out! I think oils can be airbrushed too, so a hard stencil would give precise definition and smooth surface first, then gently blend with a thinner dampened cotton bud. All sounds good in theory, but...

I wonder if this box will still be available in Italy as well:

However, I wonder if Italeri intends to release the new Sparviero's box that it announced a few years ago soon:

Ciao, Cuajete, the version above is now very rare also in Italy. I found mine on eBay Italy after a long search.
The second, if I remember well, was effectively released a limited edition. As before, I think that sometimes it pops out...
