This is the big Bombcat from Tamiya I built OOB on commission. And she's really big! She also contains an arduino board for light effects and three servos for wing swap and the stabilators. The stand is made from wooden board, primered and sanded smooth. The bent aluminium pipe has the power cables on the inside.
The kit comes with nice additions for a late A-Model and the depicted machine was used in OIF mainly for Close Air Support, Forward Air Controller Airborne and Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance. I found some interesting stories on the net as the squadron had 5 land based machines in 2003, which were especially busy - teaching the F-15Es how to FAC(A), leading coalition strikes and acting as the personal air force of Task Force 121. Cool stuff!
Side note on the loadout: 2x AIM-9L, 2x GBU-10, 2x MK82. F-14s happened to carry dumb bombs as a back-up, if things went hairy during CAS (and they were extremely precise with those), if nothing bad happened they jettisoned those into the sea in order to meet the weight restrictions on carrier landings. Quite a waste but still a lot cheaper than dumping LGBs...
So sad to see her go, she looked quite impressive hovering over her 1:48 brethren and I had a ton of fun with her!
