Finally got settled in at the new house and sorted out a space for building and airbrushing, so I hope to make a start on this one in the next couple of days.

Although I'm still waiting for the new LED lamp to arrive for some proper lighting, I made a start on it earlier today with most of the chassis components assembled and awaiting a final clean-up prior to priming and painting. Despite being nearly 50yrs old, assembly has been pretty straight forward so far with the only minor issue encountered being with the molding seam lines which need to be dealt with.
The instructions indicate not to glue the wheels so that they rotate (as well as the winch) but have found that they tend to wobble around a bit too much for my liking. Once painted and weathered, I'll probably glue them securely in position to ensure they stay properly aligned and vertical etc.
Good to be back at the bench and building something finally.

That's an interesting subject !!! Got a soft spot for the english trucks !!

Great to hear that you have the modelling area shorted out. This model brings memories, I build it 30+ years ago.... but the result was for sure nowhere near to what you are going to do with it 😉 looking forward seeing this old beauty receiving the treatment ot deserves

Thanks mate. Its good to finally have a proper dedicated space for building and painting but desperately need some better lighting. Have ordered a new LED lamp which should do the job. 😉 👍

Cheers guys 🙂
I finished up the basic assembly today of the Howitzer and its limber cart as well as the quad gun tractor.
Lots of tedious clean-up work to do now with seam line removal and some joins that need a bit of filling.

Hah, in photo #6, there's a box of SS France, my brother worked on that ship later with another name (later when the ship run by somebody else and the ship got a new name).

@ Treehugger - Interesting 🙂
Have finished spraying the base colours and made a start on some of the finer detail painting.
The body and wheels have not been secured yet so that I can install the windows and dirty up the insides of the wheel arches later.

Been a while since I updated this build, but lost a bit of mojo to continue working on it due to several silly mistakes I made on the interior and front axle.
I mistakenly installed several of the hand levers inside facing the wrong way, which isn't too big a deal as you can barely see inside anyway, and also somehow managed to secure the front axle on backwards as well, so I'm unable to install the drive shafts or steering tie rod. Again, not a big deal as you cant see underneath anyway, but still annoyed the hell out of me. I considered tearing it apart to correct it, but I reasoned that it would do more harm than good in the end.
Anyway, I finally gave it a panel line wash and then sealed everything under a protective flat clear coat.
Next up is to break out the oils and Tamiya pastels and begin dirtying it up a bit ahead of the final assembly.

Having done many similar mistakes myself, and not being able to tolerate them because my head would probably explode, I devised a method for correcting them.
It's not perfect and the parts will suffer slight damage nonetheless, but usually it's acceptable. Here's the trick: I use thin cement to UNglue. 🙂
First I put some cement around the join and let the material soften for about a minute. Then I use a sharp knife to separate the parts slightly, but only a millimeter or so. These steps are repeated until the parts come apart again.
When the separate parts have dried I clean up with a file and then the parts can be reassembled the correct way.

Same as Jean-Christophe: I use Tamiya Extra Thin Cement for this purpose.

Thanks Jean & Neuling. Yeah, I'm aware of the liquid cement trick for separating parts again and used it quite extensively on this project to "melt" away the seem lines on some of the more delicate and hard to reach parts on this build. But, I had secured the axle to the chassis with a pretty good amount of Tamiya white cap cement to ensure a good bond. There was no way I was going to be able to separate them again without doing a lot of damage in the process. As it can't be seen, I decided it was best just to let it go, and press on. Notch it up to a moment of inattention and just a dumb-arse mistake on my part. 😉
Anyway, I finished it off finally yesterday, pics to follow...

My first completed build since moving house.
Awesome to finally have a dedicated space for both building and airbrushing!
For a kit that is nearly 50 years old, I found that it still went together quite well, with the only problems encountered being of my own making as previously mentioned. However, in saying that; the kit is not up to the standards of more recent kits in regards to the finer details. There are aftermarket resin and photo etch detail sets still available for it to address this, but personally I think it would be far better (and cheaper) to purchase a more modern tooling to take advantage of the advancements of todays plastic molding techniques. On the flip-side, this Tamiya boxing offers an all-in-one solution by including the tractor, limber (ammunition) cart, and Ordinance 25 pounder artillery gun in the one box that I don't believe is currently available from any other kit manufacturer.
Cheers for following and also thanks to Martin for the group build invite 👍

Woh, Mate you did it again. Great Paint job and weathering on this oldie. 👍 I think the great modelers don't need good kits and aftermarket to show their Capabilities. Congratulations

James, your build meets my expectations. Especially the wear and tear effects from sandstorms give a very realistic touch. I agree with Rui, Guy and Spanjaard.

Wonderful work James!
Cheers to the first finished model since you moved.

Thanks guys... will leave the diorama to those with more talent 😉
2 November 2023, 21:19

Totally agree !!! The weathering work is very fine !!! 👌👌 A worn out effect perfect
3 November 2023, 05:26

Fantastic work, beautiful finish and weathering, incredible result for this old and venerable model, congrats!
3 November 2023, 16:41

Great wear and tear weathering. I' also jealous of your lovely display cabinet 🙂
16 November 2023, 20:42

Thanks mate, much appreciated 🙂👍
I've got the new Airfix 1/35 ambulance and flat-bed truck which I intend to do in the North Africa Caunter scheme as well... soon-ish. Should look cool sitting on the shelves all togther 😉
17 November 2023, 02:43

Cheers Lode... I made a couple silly errors during assembly though... must be out of practice 😉👍
27 November 2023, 15:58

Awesome job. Got this in the stash. older brother built one when new way back when.

Very impressive James. Ik saw lately Rogue Heroes on TV and what you've created, is so realstic. Congrats with this build
5 February 2024, 07:04

Very photorealistic. I'd love to see you putting these gems into a diorama! 😃
12 February 2024, 15:30

Thanks mate but I just don't have the free space for it. 🙂
