Tamiya Do-335
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/9/3/1/1553931-118183-88-720.jpg)
OOB cockpit. Didn't bother with rudder pedal straps since the pilot's feet are going to cover them anyway...
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/9/3/2/1553932-118183-82-720.jpg)
I forget sometimes what a pleasure it is build Tamiya's well-engineered kits. No glue at all and no gaps or steps. This is a nice change!
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/9/3/3/1553933-118183-77-720.jpg)
I thought the kit cockpit was OK. The decal wouldn't add to it, so I just punched out the dial faces and applied them. Little bit of Future for "glass" and it turned out well.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/9/3/4/1553934-118183-20-720.jpg)
Good fit continues. Will be closing the bomb bay to preserve the sleek looks.

![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/9/3/7/1553937-118183-18-720.jpg)
The pilot figure was fairly disappointing. Tamiya stepped up their game on later kits, but the figure in this one is pretty poorly molded.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/9/3/8/1553938-118183-68-720.jpg)
Poor demarcation lines between components of the pilot, but I did what I could.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/9/3/9/1553939-118183-60-720.jpg)
Still working on the face but should look fine behind a closed canopy.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/9/4/0/1553940-118183-62-720.jpg)
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/7/5/9/1561759-118183-46-720.jpg)
Not much interesting, ready for primer coat. Canopy masking was tedious and time-consuming, but it fit perfectly with no steps, nice!
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/7/6/0/1561760-118183-21-720.jpg)
Minimal fuss on the bottom side.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/7/5/8/1561758-118183-69-720.jpg)
Gear and bays are finished except for some weathering of course and a brake line or two.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/7/6/1/1561761-118183-51-720.jpg)
I usually enjoy the painting/weathering more than the building stage, so I wanted to get the gear as close to done as possible before moving on to painting because I have found that if I still have all the fiddly bits to do after paint/decals, then it's more of a chore to finish. This way, I just just add a few details, weather a bit and it'll be done.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/7/2/8/1621728-118183-62-720.jpg)
Shading/undercoat done.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/7/2/3/1621723-118183-29-720.jpg)
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/7/2/5/1621725-118183-58-720.jpg)
The arrow has spots. Should have used a template!
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/7/2/7/1621727-118183-16-720.jpg)
Minor chipping done but went a little too heavy on the blend coats and wiped out a lot of the variation but the preshading needed it or it looked too stark. Still, a little tonal variation shows through in real life vs. the pictures.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/7/2/6/1621726-118183-97-720.jpg)
Some weathering should bring a little of the variation out and will be adding some oils to further improve the panel contrast.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/7/2/4/1621724-118183-96-720.jpg)
Better on the underside as far as variation goes.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/7/2/2/1621722-118183-67-720.jpg)
On to decals. Can use some of the kit's decals, but they're 1) old and 2) Tamiya decals, so they're not all that great. The rest are being robbed from an Eduard Bf-109E7 and it's my first time using the "new" style decals and it's a bit of a learning curve.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/7/8/0/1632780-118183-43-720.jpg)
Close to the finish line with the usual bits and bobs to add.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/8/1/1632781-118183-65-720.jpg)
Experiments with oils and smoke stains came off pretty well. Still regretting going a little heavy on the blend coat but lesson learned. The Bf109 Trop filters worked out well too.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/8/2/4/1638824-118183-58-720.jpg)
Calling this one done. Few things I would have done different, but like any landing you can walk away from is a good one, so too any build you learn from is a success.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/8/2/5/1638825-118183-71-720.jpg)
The Trop filters are Eduard bits. Only had one from a spare kit, the other helpfully supplied by a fellow scalemate. Other than that, it was OOB, with more decals robbed from an Eduard 109E7.

Thanks for the comment, Mark. You're right. After cutting trimming by hand, I got a relatively cheap set from UMM-USA, here.

Little bit janky to use compared to more sophisticated sets but since I only use it once in a while it works for me.

Ordered today a set from Belgium. It's the third time that I missed, so time to get one. (By the way, I'm also busy with the Pfeil, plane nr 1-3, following yours a bit beside it.) This kit has a great fit of almost every part.

Totally agree. I forget how well Tamiya's kit go together and then I go and build one. It was so nice to have the canopy fit with no steps and no wing root gaps at all. Even the spine cover was no trouble at all. Please post your progress too!

Thanks! Though I ended up covering over a lot of that work by going too heavy on the blend coat. 🙁

Thanks Anthony! This was a fun build and being Tamiya, it fit together really well, which was a nice change, LOL.

What if the Do-335 had been around in late 1941?
