Willys Jeep MB Build Progress

Olive drab color modulation. I started with a coat of chipping solution, then airbrushed each modulation layer on top. Once done, I went back with water and a stiff brush to expose some of the original chipping detail around the interior and body.

4 shades of olive drab for the color modulation. Base was standard olive drab from Vallejo. The darker shade was olive drab, with dark green and mahogany. The two lighter shades were combinations of olive drab, khaki, and buff.

Detail work on the wheels. A base coat of olive drab, a clear coat, rubber painted with tire black, an AK dark umber pin wash, and a slight olive drab color modulation sprayed overtop everything to bring them together.

For the seats, I went with an olive drab base coat, with a series of khaki and buff glazes, before a clear coat and dark umber wash. Still some work to do here to clean up the frames, but I'm liking the effect on the seat surfaces themselves.

Almost there. Just need to do some last weathering on the body and wheels, and get a matte coat down to protect it. Then it’s on to the next part of this diorama.

I've never done damp earth effects like this before so I'm practicing on a spare wheel before bringing them to the wheels on the kit. I need to cut the dry grass shorter, I think. I'm going for damp earth and not a "wet" look in the end, so I'll check back on it once the mud dries a bit more.

This will eventually go onto a larger diorama. But until then I wanted to test out some terrain modeling, so today's a simple circular base and dry fit for the road feature that this will live on for now.

First pass at earth effects applied to the wheels and undercarriage. Next up is post-shading the dirt, dust and additional dry earth effects.

Another look at the first pass of the earth effects.

Working on its (temporary) vignette base until I get a larger diorama underway. VMS Smart Mud is everything it’s cracked up to be.

I’m not convinced that the road signs will stay as part of the eventual vignette, but I wanted to give scratch-building them a try. They still need some weathering, but I have to decide on what goes on the top sign before I get there.

Had to take a step away for a bit, but finally bringing the pieces together for a dry fit. I laid down a darker brown on top of the lighter shading I’d done on the earth tones to bring it back a bit from looking too dry.

Watching closely, and making notes on your tips.....the worn seats look very realistic. Inspiring work for sure 🙂

This is some fine Willys Jeep. I too particularly like the seats. In my eyes the nice muddy appearance of the Jeep would look better if the terrain would be muddy too.
