KoPro DH88 Comet
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/9/9/5/763995-30596-95-pristine.jpg)
I am building the Green version.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/9/9/1/763991-30596-43-pristine.jpg)
There is a nice cockpit inside, but it is difficult to see!
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/9/9/2/763992-30596-80-pristine.jpg)
No locating pins or tabs on the model except for the tailplanes, and they were not made well.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/9/9/3/763993-30596-26-pristine.jpg)
I made the mass balances with piano wire and a drop of glue.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/9/9/4/763994-30596-30-pristine.jpg)
Drill holes carefully to install your own pins for the wings.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/9/9/6/763996-30596-34-pristine.jpg)
Take your time and locate the holes for the wing pins.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/9/9/7/763997-30596-76-pristine.jpg)
Install a scratchbuilt plastic dowel.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/9/9/8/763998-30596-83-pristine.jpg)
It makes the wing installation much stronger and easy to align.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/1/5/6/780156-30596-79-pristine.jpg)
Engine nacelles in place. They don't fit very well, should have spent more time on them.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/1/5/8/780158-30596-34-pristine.jpg)
First coat of white primer.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/1/5/7/780157-30596-92-pristine.jpg)
Test spray with the British Racing Green.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/1/5/9/780159-30596-11-pristine.jpg)
Finished with the green. Starting to look good.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/1/6/0/780160-30596-89-pristine.jpg)
Next will be a gloss topcoat.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/2/2/4/783224-30596-43-pristine.jpg)
I found the green to be a little too dark so I lightened it a little and sprayed a second coat.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/2/2/1/783221-30596-31-pristine.jpg)
I also added some CMK resin nav lights, there were none in the kit.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/2/2/5/783225-30596-60-pristine.jpg)
Canopy frame and wheels finished thanks to Peewit masks. They work very well.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/2/2/2/783222-30596-26-pristine.jpg)
Now the gloss coat is on, decals will be next.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/2/2/3/783223-30596-80-pristine.jpg)
Decals went on very well today. They are thin and a bit tricky. Also the letters should be white, but they are supplied in silver.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/3/7/5/783375-30596-78-720.jpg)
The wheels are in place!
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/3/7/6/783376-30596-55-pristine.jpg)
The wheel doors installed. Also a view of my scratchbuilt pitot tube.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/3/7/7/783377-30596-38-pristine.jpg)
Found some very nice Union Jack decals online. The kit flags were no good at all.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/3/7/8/783378-30596-26-pristine.jpg)
Close up of the scratchbuilt pitot tube, made with stretched sprue.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/7/1/4/784714-30596-76-720.jpg)
Since this kit comes with a fairly nice cockpit, I posed the canopy open.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/7/1/7/784717-30596-20-pristine.jpg)
The lettering should be white but the kit decals are silver. Might have to build another now!
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/7/1/8/784718-30596-53-720.jpg)
She has quite a profile.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/7/1/9/784719-30596-22-720.jpg)
Soon, a green full size replica will be flying in England.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/7/1/5/784715-30596-42-pristine.jpg)
Now, 53 years after I built the red Frog kit, I have all three of the Comets together.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/7/1/6/784716-30596-95-720.jpg)
A trio of sleek and fast historical racers. Very soon, we may see three full size a/c flying together!

Looks like this kit is not a lot better than the awful Airfix one. That said, good job so far Norm.

It will make a nicer looking Comet in the end but it is easily 4 times the work. The decals are wrong too. Instead of white markings they are printed in silver.

Just had to Google this aircraft to confirm my knowledge of it.
Only three made and sold for a discount price of 5000 pounds.
Commissioned just to win the race to Australia.
Then there were another two built later on with one being a Mail version for France
Thankfully two still survive.
Black Magic was lost for forty years.
It's currently being restored.
Maybe the green one is still out there somewhere

Small point of historical fact Willy, but the actual winner of the air race, albeit on handicap, was in fact a KLM DC-2:

And that was after getting lost in the middle of the night near Albury (requiring the whole town's street lights to flash in Morse Code: A-L-B-U-R-Y).

@Norm - sorry for hijacking your thread for a bit.
@Wilky - not sure if you've seen the Movietone film of the race, but the acceptance speech is hilarious.

There is also some great footage of the various competitors and their planes.

Yes, I've seen a movie at the State Library and have a YouTube video of it on my channel.
You must write Willy too much
