Pfalz E.I
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/9/5/4/919954-58861-25-720.jpg)
I wanted something different so I selected the Pfalz E.I.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/3/1/9/911319-58861-17-720.jpg)
I ordered all of the 1/48 scale rotary engines direct from Small Stuff. The plan is to get an aircraft to match up with each engine. The Pfalz E.I seemed like a unique option for the Oberursal U.0.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/3/1/7/911317-58861-12-720.jpg)
The Small Stuff engines go together without too much trouble. They have a video on their website which is helpful. There are some extra pieces and parts which is very handy because you will most likely lose a few. This engine was painted with AK Interactive Extreme Metal paints. The ignition wire is a small copper wire.
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/3/1/8/911318-58861-19-720.jpg)
The fuselage has some sinkholes in the rear and needs some filling. The interior needs to be thinned out in order for the frame to fit inside. You can build the cockpit framework on the tray and slide it into the fuselage which helps.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/3/2/6/911326-58861-12-720.jpg)
The cowling has to be thinned significantly for the engine to fit. I really like the Pfalz emblem on the front of the cowling
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/0/2/0/914020-58861-83-720.jpg)
The PE added to the fuselage and getting ready for the final coat of primer.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/0/2/1/914021-58861-11-720.jpg)
I rigged the majority of rear and lower cockpit bays without turnbuckles. You won't see these areas and I can save some time and money on the turnbuckles. The bays on the left and right of the pilot will get turnbuckles as these are visible from the top.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/9/5/5/919955-58861-50-720.jpg)
The elevator and rudder cables were attached to the stick and rudder then installed in the cockpit
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/0/2/3/914023-58861-55-720.jpg)
I cut the ends of the PE seatbelts off and glued them to some scrap micro cloth I saved from a set of 1/32 scale HGW seatbelts. Old retired guys have to save money where we can.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/0/2/2/914022-58861-67-720.jpg)
The gas and oil tank straps are black scrap decals cut to the appropriate width. The gas tank pressure pump is brass tubing. I will add the elevator and rudder control cables to the stick and rudder and then glue that in place. The wire bracing on the sides will be the last thing that goes on.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/9/5/6/919956-58861-53-720.jpg)
Bracing is Infini Aero Rigging, .5mm MBT and GasPatch Resin turnbuckles
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/9/5/7/919957-58861-94-720.jpg)
The instrument panel will be mounted then the entire assembly will be placed in the fuselage. Unfortunately very little of the cockpit is visible.
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/2/4/9/920249-58861-65-720.jpg)
If you line the upper decking up with the front of the fuselage there is a 1mm gap behind the seat where the metal decking meets the fabric.
![Album image #14 Album image #14](/albums/img/2/4/8/920248-58861-21-720.jpg)
The front firewall needs to be carefully positioned to ensure the cowling fits correctly.
![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/0/8/9/921089-58861-53-720.jpg)
This is lower control horn for the wing warping mechanism. The cut in the strut has to be as wide as the exit point on the lower fuselage. The pin is .5mm styrene rod.
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/0/9/1/921091-58861-47-720.jpg)
The same mechanism with the additional brackets attached.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/0/9/2/921092-58861-11-720.jpg)
The kit PE attached to the wheel and wing bracing struts. I hope the CA holds.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/0/9/0/921090-58861-73-720.jpg)
I rolled the cooling jacket around a drill bit. The gun barrel is .7mm MBT.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/6/8/2/922682-58861-14-720.jpg)
Primer and then a coat of Tamiya flat white with a couple drops of XF-55 Deck Tan.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/6/8/4/922684-58861-95-720.jpg)
This is the aircraft I'm building. The top of the wing ribs have a black line over each. The black metal looks glossy.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/6/8/3/922683-58861-94-720.jpg)
I painted in the wing spars and fuselage skeleton. I might have overdone the fuselage.
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/6/8/1/922681-58861-25-720.jpg)
The spars would be much more visible from underneath on a sunny day by I didn't want to make it too prominent.
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/6/8/6/922686-58861-11-720.jpg)
When the fabric dries I'll mask it off and paint the black metal parts.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/9/6/6/923966-58861-72-720.jpg)
I still have to spray some gloss black on the back side of the cowling and then gloss coat it. The rear portion of the fuselage needs to have the black decals added to the edges.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/9/6/5/923965-58861-56-720.jpg)
I mounted the Small Stuff Oberursel U.0. There is very little room inside the cowling.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/9/6/4/923964-58861-15-720.jpg)
The underside of the wings and elevator as a test with some gloss black touch-up. The decals are brittle but settle down nicely. The elevator and rudder decals have a clear film which cover the whole control surface, I cut it out. Many of the decals are so long or large they break, I cut many of them into smaller pieces which made them more manageable and prevented excessive cracking.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/7/6/8/925768-58861-69-720.jpg)
The Pfalz is pretty much assembled with the exception of the windscreen and propeller. Next comes the rigging.
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/7/6/7/925767-58861-46-720.jpg)
The rigging is MBT05, Infini Aero rigging and GasPatch turnbuckles. I made the eyes from copper wire. I try to do as much rigging as possible before it gets mounted to the aircraft.
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/2/0/3/927203-58861-89-720.jpg)
Rigging is complete
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/2/0/1/927201-58861-65-720.jpg)
The landing gear bungee is thread from my wife's quilting supplies
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/2/0/4/927204-58861-91-720.jpg)
The kit has PE control horns with the holes already drilled in them making it easier to attach the cables.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/2/0/2/927202-58861-45-720.jpg)
I still need to mount a propeller and windscreen and add some weathering and oil stains.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/2/1/5/990215-58861-37-720.jpg)
Finally finished. It always takes me a while to get the laminated look of the propeller finished.

Bilbo I've been watching your work on the Pfalz. Have you been working on it lately. The last pics I saw were from the middle of November. If you use the Small Stuff rotary you'll have to really thin out the cowling.

Hi JW!
Too much work, too many personal things to manage and faaar too many projects running at the same time...
Plus, my rotaries from Small Stuff never arrived and just have been sent again from Israel (thanks Eugeny! That's great service!).
I only managed to work a very tiny bit on my Australian Fort Model T project.
I'm in urgent need of some real down time. 🙂

Thanks for the generous comments. I need to spend some time checking out what you all are building. I've learned a lot from the members here.

Your model is a perfect testimony that even a 'simple' Eindecker' can be turned into a masterpiece. Chapeau bas!
