just another 88 gun build
Classic old Tamiya kit
The photo which created the motivation in me to build a 88 in this configuration the moment I have seen it
Let's get started
The surface has lots of flaws, sink marks and burrs but I'm still enjoying the process
Daily report, gun base mostly completed. Still there are some modifications required to achieve a accurate flak 36
Okay here is the question, did FlaK 36's had rolled armor texture on their shield? I had been for photo walk around of 88s and it's the only one with shield. Any help appreciated
Outrigger modification
99% done
Lots of sanding awaits me tomorrow. Also the texture is half done because of the puttied areas, it will be done tomorrow also (hopefully)
Filling these 4 boxes are essential for a correct 88 gun. Also surface imperfections caused by the mold itself are sanded down
Also sanded, filled and sanded again the injection marks on the back side of the shield
I used usual green tamiya cement to soften the plastic and used two types of old cheap brushes to stipple the surface.
After wet sanding with P1000 Tamiya
Both sides done
Backside of the shield
Also sanding and texturing of the base is done
I rebuilt the lock handle with 0.3mm acetate sheet. The took the photo wrong before modification, but it was just a solid piece. Dragon kit has it same, which is inaccurate.(such a shame on a such price tag)
My first ever FlaK, Airfix 1/76 Flak 18 which I had built when I was 11. It's good to see how your attitude towards modelling change through years
I was a little bit lazy nowadays so not much of progress done, wiring and drilling here and there, preparing surface for weld lines and flame cuts and lots of time spending checking reference photos.
An awesome reference from 8.8cm Flak 18/36/37 vol. I book by Janusz Ledwoc. As I have ordered Hobbyfan FlaK crew I was looking for solid photos of a panzer gray flak manned by fallschirmjäger crew with Zeltbahn 31/ Splittermuster camouflage. That's the reason why these photos are amazing, they are dressed exactly like the figures of Hobbyfan including the ropes on the helmets. Also notice the eagle on the helmet which indicates they are soldiers of Luftwaffe and in 1941, this means they are the Fallschirmjäger of Hermann Göring Div. Only downside is the lack of white indication paints on the fenders of boggies, but I think I can overlook it
Deformation on fenders of boggies
First I scribed then used tamiya epoxy putty to create weld lines. A little over scale but better then having nothing or kit provided ones

Edit: I uploaded 3 more photos of real gun, and looks like there is really a texture on the shield.

I would agree with you about this texture. On picture 7 it is very clear.

Tuning in as well. Looks nice so far 👍
The shield looks great in my opinion. That's a crafty idea to soften the plastic and using brushes to create the texture.

Thanks Glint! I was a bit anxious because I have never seen a 88 gun model with textured shield but I'm relieved that the result is acceptable. The texturing technic came from Night Shift Youtube Channel, strongly recommended.

Those texture came from rusting after the war. Many German stuff was standing in rain and weather for years. German steel was known for very plain.
Although your weald bead at the sockel of the gun is wrong. As you can see it was bolted.
But nice build so far
Greetings

Thanks for constructive comments Joerg! You are probably correct about the shield, I will try to remove the texture. About the sockel, I uploaded another photo and it is more clear that there is a weld here plus the bolts. I know my weld seams are pretty harsh and oversized on this area so I will redo it according to this photo.

Yes, know I know, what you mean by doing a weld line there. There is a welded ring under the bolted socket to give the construction more strength. In your pic, you clearly see the gap between the welded ring and the socket. Nice of you, that you will change 👍

I stand corrected. I have removed the weld and not gonna apply another one to that area. Thanks for valuable information ?
