BUILDING A 1966 REVELL KIT

Album image #1
The kit that I used is the original 1966 issue. The decals were not useable, so I bought the SBS sheet number 72-018.

Album image #2
A very simple basic kit but I love building the oldies from my childhood.

Album image #3
Raimo usually had a beer when he built his kits, so I had one at the start date for him!

Album image #4
Very rare back in those days, but many Revell 1:72 kits had a complete engine in them.

Album image #5
The engine looks very good for such an old mould.

Album image #6
Engine in place.

Album image #7
Zinc chromate primer done, ready to assemble the airframe.

Album image #8
No need to glue the cowl or prop on. That way they can be removed to view the engine.

Album image #9
I had to scratchbuild two gun barrels, the kit only had two but this aircraft had four in my reference pictures.

Album image #10
Primed with Alclad 2 white.

Album image #11
RLM Yellow sprayed as needed.

Album image #12
Underside gets RLM65 Lichtblau.

Album image #13
The upper side is first sprayed Dark Green overall.

Album image #14
The Black is sprayed on next. I used Tamiya NATO Black.

Album image #15
Starting to look the part!

Album image #16
I decided to put the pilot in the cockpit as I used to in my early builds.

Album image #17
Raimo in the cockpit!

Album image #18
I was going to use the kit stand, so I primed it in white. I wanted to attempt to replicate the Revell logo in the correct colours.

Album image #19
First some yellow.

Album image #20
Then the red stripes.

Album image #21
Finally the Royal Blue background.

Album image #22
I was quite pleased with the result.

Album image #23
Gives a nice look to the model.

Album image #24
The old Revell kit makes a nice replica.

Album image #25
I had some photo etch ring and bead sights, they sure are tiny! A nice Oldie Goldie for my buddy!

Album image #26
The antenna is EZ Line.

Album image #27
The kit pitot tube was incorrect for the Finnish aircraft, so I modified it. Ready for flight, Raimo!

Thank you for sharing this with us . I have a few old kit`s in my stash . I build them all when I was young and now thanks to ebay I have them again all new in their boxes. I will not build them again. It`s my memories bank.

Super job Norm and a fine tribute to your friend. I share your feelings about the joy of simple old kits. I find great pleasure in giving them the TLC we normally reserve for todays uberkits. The perfect remedy for AMS induced stagnation.

Album info

My online buddy Raimo Leino died suddenly in May of 2021, so I built this Finnish Curtis Hawk in his memory.
