The 55th Fighter Group at WAR (over Kovářská)
Battle over Ore Mountains 11th September 1944

It´s the original 9/11 - on September 11th 1944 the B-17s and P-51Ds got into a huge battle over the Ore Mountains in the Czech Republic, and the fight resulted in high casualties on both sides. One SuperFortress fell on the school in Kovářská, the tail landed in the attic and the tail gunner miraculously survived the crash. The school now bears his name - Sgt. Kluttz. The fighter escort was provided by the 55th Fighter Group on that fateful day.
