The Brigade formed in September 1939 as an independent Army Tank Brigade but by May 1940 had received so few tanks that it was converted to the 2nd Motor Machine Gun Brigade. The Brigade was however reverted to an Army Tank Brigade in December 1940 when tanks were more readily available.
The brigade was designated 25th Army Tank Brigade in Jun 1942 and was first deployed to Tunisia under 1st Army command in 1943. By this time the brigade had been equipped with Churchill Tanks which were showing themselves in the hills and mountains to be extremely useful in climbing steep terrain. By May 1944, 25th Army Tank Brigade was in Italy under 8th Army command supporting the 1st Canadian Division at the Hitler Line. From August to October 1944, the brigade was at the Gothic Line under the same command and assignment. By December 1944, the 25th Army Tank Brigade was disbanded with its Regiments reassigned to make up for losses in other Brigades and the formation of the new 25th Armoured Engineer Brigade.
