Tamiya Jaguar XJ2201:24
All finished. Who could deny that this is one of the most beautiful cars ever built?

George, I did say "one" of the most beautiful, all of the other Jags being right up there with it. My favourite would probably be the XJ13. The XJ220 is not a British Leyland monster. It was built while Ford owned Jaguar, and it was built by TWR anyway. I'd rate it's looks as far superior to any other supercar of the day, and probably any supercar of any generation.

Hi David, you're right, of course, but the design and concept happened while Jaguar were part of the British Leyland empire. The v-12 engine and four wheel drive were dropped to a turbo charged V6 and rear wheel drive due mainly to financial constraints, and many people cancelled their orders. Didn't the Metro 6R4 rally car use the same engine?

Mike, it sure looks like an easy build, despite the size of it. I've been looking forward to building it for over 20 years. You need to upload an album of your build.

Very nice build and painting, but i suggest using a technique boxmanbuilds uses, adding streaks of masking tape onto the deck, then painting one colour, taking some tape off, painting another shade, taking the final layer off and then you get a wood plank like look on the deck. Otherwise its a 10/10

Thanks Kesa. If this was a larger scale and had better detail I would go the extra mile and make the decks look better. But it's a 50 year old kit with low detail and an awful lot of putty required to get it looking half decent. I'm not particularly into ship modelling. This was just one of my father's kits that I'm trying to finish off. The deck does actually look a bit better in real life. As mentioned in the pictures, the colours look a bit washed out due to my camera not picking them up very well.

For a kit from the 70's it looks like it aged well, or your just really good at this hobby. I get the thing with the camera, ive lost plenty of good moments for a pic because of my camera not being good enough lol

Kesa, the kit was actually better than I expected. The detail is minimal, and there was a lot of flash and sink holes or ejector marks in terrible places, but it mostly went together well. I'm currently building the Airfix Bismarck which my father bought at the same time as this one. It has quite a few parts that don't fit very well at all, but it's slowly coming together with the help of vast quantities of Tamiya putty.

Thanks guys. The walnut looks better in the flesh than in the photos. I like how it came out and it was easier to do than I was expecting. I had an XJ40 for about 14 years, and the wood looked almost the same as this.

Thanks Dietmar. I was thinking it might have been easier to do the sand brown first, then use masking fluid to do the green and brown, but it's hard to say whether that would have been easier. I could probably do the sand brown freehand with my airbrush now that I have figured out how to do it a bit better. The paint needed a bit more thinners and some retarder as well, but I still struggle to get a thin enough line. It's a hard pattern to do, especially with it going around corners. I like how it came out in the end, but it was an ordeal.

Thanks Gorby. I'm amazed that it came out so nice myself. I almost threw it in the bin when I saw how much of it was melted, but then I thought I might as well try and rescue it. It's very weird how the styrene goes when the tyres melt it. You can cut the melted bits off but it is soft on the inside and it will melt again. Thank goodness for Evergreen Styrene, Tamiya putty and Milliputt.

Yes indeed, it was a nightmare. I'm quite happy with how it came out, despite all the dramas. It almost ended up in the trash a few times, especially when the weathering wash wouldn't come off. I had to use isopropyl to remove what I could, and that made the clear coat go hazy, but that came right with a light rub with Tamiya lacquer thinner.

Thank you very much. I don't think I'll ever build another one of these old Pocher kits. It was fun and I love the end result, but it was very time-consuming and frustrating at times.
