I have to take to start a ship build with its base. Therefore some work at the hull and main parts of the kit is necessary. First I plan to present the Leander Class in a heavy swell, but due to some warping at the lower hull I decide to represent her in a moderate sea state. I cut a Styrofoam board in size and shaped it to fit exactly into a wooden frame. To get the best fit with the hull I cut out the outer hull lines, just 10mm deep. To get the waterline more or less exactly at water level I have to extend the lower part of the hull by adding two layers of flat styrene, to present a part of the lower hull. Some filling and sanding was required to get a fine and nice shape.

The base is in current progress, I add some layers of wall paint in a stippling motion to get a smooth wave pattern. To cover and seal the layers I'm now in progress to add some layers of whit acrylic before I will start to colorize the base. Next to this I start to fit the superstructure to the hull. Peter designed the hull with a nice sheer, but without some attention the upper part does not fit exactly.

Some more work was done to clean the main parts and to make a first dry fit. I paid some attention to the 4,5" gun barrels. They're made of white metal and does not look nice. For a couple of years, when Atlantic models came out with H.M.S. Puma, I made a sketch of new gun barrels to fit the kit part. BMK made them of brass. Sadly BMK closed the doors, but I still have some barrels in my spare box.

Well, I much like this class of Frigates and hopefully Peter will design a batch 3 with Exocet launchers soon.

Cheers, Christian

Yep and thx Mathias. Will be a slow build, because of some other projects. But that doesn't matter😉

I´m definitly not the one to complain about a looong building time as my Emden took almost 5 years.😉

Me too Mathias, fun in modelmaking is in the foreground. I have a lot of projects in progress and work on the one I like to work on🙂

Thank you James, glad you like it!

The footage is much interesting. I much like the sequences on the way and the one with the Sea King aboard. Must be tricky to land the Sea King on that small deck.

Many thx for sharing!

Cheers, Christian

It's always sad to see a ship go down even if it's for a good cause.

I have brought my own comfy chair and a notebook! This will take a while so I may as well get comfortable. Notes will be taken.

Album info

H.M.S. Cleopatra was a Batch I Leander Class Frigate commissioned in 1966. I would like to build her in her early life, late sixties, early seventies. Master pattern was hand crafted by Peter Hall. Casting and details are good, just some flash here and there. The kit isn't complex and contains just less resin and white metal parts because of a good segmentation. For example, the main super structure is just one part. Well, I hope to have a lot of fun on an more or less easy, but very detailed kit.
