King Tiger Sd.Kfz. 182 Production Turret (Rescue)

Album image #1
I was given this kit to try and rescue it from limbo. It was partially painted in flat black but I will be redoing the base coat to test out my first airbrush.

Album image #2
I've watched Andy at Hobby Headquarters airbrush a few vehicles after fully assembling them. Going to try my hand at it. Might have to sand away some of what's already there though.

Album image #3
Wheels. Oh so many wheels. Surprising how much faster they seem when you're not worried about painting them until later.

Album image #4
The return wheel on one side was missing a piece. I don't quite have the scratchbuild skills yet to fashion a new one, but it shouldn't be missed much. This is a test kit for painting anyways.. it won't be entering any contests.

All the parts that won't get hand-painted later have been added to the upper hull. That nylon mesh will do in place of photo-etch.

Album image #6
Had to find a replacement screw around the house to mount the cannon. It's not perfect but won't really be visible once the turret is finished. Not sure why the original owner painted these parts black, when the interior will be flat white.

Album image #7
All the tread hooks and grab handles made good use of my tweezers. Despite a couple of close calls, the carpet remonster remained unfed today.

Album image #8
Test fitting all the parts that aren't glued down. About ready to start painting, then the treads and tools will go on afterward.

Album image #9
Looks better with an even coat of NATO Black. This will serve as a shadow coat and any imperfections will be less noticeable once the camouflage is applied.

Album image #10
First pass of camouflage paint on the King Tiger. It's not perfect, but not bad for my first attempt. Most of the armour I've done in the past was a solid base coat only.

Album image #11
Lost a bit of time trying to fix the damage from the cleaning lady. Some tiny parts are lost forever to the vacuum. But now the turret interior is painted. Just needs some details done and then we'll start adding the tools to the exterior.

Bought an airbrush last week. Never used one before. Thought I'd use this armor kit as a guinea pig since it didn't cost me anything. I'll be less heartbroken if I make a complete mess of it. The original owner started painting parts but realized they were never going to finish it and gave it away. Lucky me.

Hi! And how do you like airbrushing?😉

Hi, Holger. So far I love it (except for cleaning the airbrush). I find it hard to go back to brushwork except for fine details. Wish I had taken the plunge sooner.

😄 Yeah, cleaning does not make fun except you have a ultrasonic cleaner. I can recommend such a device very much. And they are cheap. 20 Bucks or so.

Bradley? Is this the real Bradley Furminger? Armour? And, a KT at that! I did this kit a couple of years ago and was VERY proud of the result. Now, I look at it and cringe! Glad to see you branching out and trying new stuff. How is the tool collecting going? Bet you have more than a hobby knife now! 😉

This isn't branching out, this is reverting to my roots. I used to do armour exclusively. Just got into a car groove over the past year. The toolkit is expanding. I now have an airbrush, tweezers, sprue cutters, and a file along with some much better paintbrushes. No dedicated workspace yet, still playing time-share with the dining table. But my youngun is getting more involved with the hobby so it may be easier to convince my wife that a hobby room would be a good investment.

I like it Brad! Good job on the camo mate! Next tool investment should be some lights. Canada must be very dark and gloomy this time of year. Tooth picks are cheap and you'll be surprised how many uses you will have for them. Goin' good mate!

Thanks, Peter. It is a bit dark and gloomy - lots of wintery weather blasting us these days. But I like the look of models more in natural light than in artificial light.
