Douglas SBD-1 Dauntless, USMC 2-MB-13
Correct diameter but too deep….🙁
Correct diameter and correct depth🙂
1,5 mm brass tube glued into 2 of 6 holes on the front of the motor. 2. Attempt fits.
Brass tubes glued with CA to the front of the fuselage.
Engine from the kit. I found the pushrods and ignition wires too massive and removed them. New pushrods of 0.6 mm round rod in place. Wires coming at next.
1,5 mm brass tube as connector for power supply (3 V DC)
Its easier to fit the flaps to the wing before installing the wing to the fuselage.
Very good fit.
Connection cables successfully soldered.
Connection points for inflight configuration and voltage supply for the motor.
LSO light (red, green, amber). 1st step: cut out cleaned, rear plate added (0,13 mm plastic), 3 lights (punched with 0,8 mm flattened needle) from colored self adhesive foil.
Step 2: transparent cover made of narrow strip of Tesa tape.
Step 3: masked with an externally cutted mask (Tamiya tape).
Green is a mix of H131 and H2.
The result of a good modeling day🙂
Last airbrush session: dark grey as antiglare panel.
Unfortunately red and yellow are in the wrong place 🙁 so I had to fix them.
On course again: yellow stripe is now correct in the middle.
For in flight configuration you don’t need the landing legs.
Ground plate 1 (left): 40 mm Bambus & printed Dibond sandwich plate.
Ground plate 2 (right): 40 mm Bambus & printed Dibond sandwich plate.
Both ground plates together.
Rear panel 1 (left): printed Dibond sandwich plate & 12 mm birch wood Mux plate 250x50 mm
Both rear panels together.
Both displays together minus attachments for the SBD’s (2-MB-13 and Hanno’s 2-MB-1) and batteries.
Result of the group build: both planes of the VMB-2 together… (right flies the squadron leader, Hanno’s MB-1🙂)

I haven't even started and already I get I like. I love SCM🙂🙂🙂🙂
By the way I intend to build my SBD in flying condition and found already a suitable motor (old Walkman).

I find out that the motors are unfortunately too deep and we had to modify the cabin. As we all know you can find anything on eBay, shorter motors also🙂. Today I received the package. 🙂

I wonder if maybe those silver oxide batteries found in watches are better types of batteries in models. My wrist watch's battery lasted over five years before it had to be changed. The silver oxide batteries are also fairly small and cheap, if one is ok with non original Seiko silver oxide batteries. 🙂
Having said that I guess it goes without saying that even small batteries can be dangerous (in some situations). I read about how a house burned down some years ago (presumably true) because of how one 9V battery allegedly fell down from a shelf, hitting another 9V battery (iirc), apparently causing a spark and igniting something volitile on the floor inside a garage.

Very nice indeed ! I was not aware of the group build, but I may decide to join with my own A.M. SBD-1 with yellow wings. I need a kit that builds well at the moment (mired in kits with so-so fit).
Are we sure the interior was interior green on these early SBDs ? I haven't checked my references yet, but I thought it may be silver.
I will have to watch Dive Bomber anyways, inspiring builds !

Hello Robert & Villiers: thanks for you praise. Indeed we has a lot of fun installing both SBD's to the base ans shot the pictures!🙂
Boris: you are welcome! Which plane you intend to build?
You question is very good. Hanno and I we talked about this question and we decided to paint the interiors green because the interior color you can seen on the original picture of the 2-MB-13 is rather green than alu. See please the teaser picture of my project.

Hi Bernhard, I checked my set of pictures and indeed even the earliest SBDs seem to have had interior green cockpits.
I have not decided which of the Marines SBDs I want to build yet. Maybe 2-MB-6, so as to complement your 2 builds...
