Vickers 66 Vimy Chinese Aviation Service 1920
...a decal decision....Early Chinese service using the these Blue Rider decals....all aluminum so this will be a rattle can job....looking forward to the construction and rigging....
No interior at all in this hybrid kit/airplane with a wing from a bomber and a fuselage made after WWI.....the kit has nothing so a cockpit is under construction...the instrument panel is from the spare box....the seats are from Gaspatch...
...most parts are ready for prime time but there are still others to do.....the crack in the top wing is not there on the real aircraft and is used by the kit maker to help with the two wing construction....filling it and sanding is out of the question because the wing tips go on late....it will be hidden behind strips of styrene....yup, a model, not a replica...hope no one minds....
...a rattle can of Tamiya Silver later....
...the windows will be filled from the inside with clear plastic.....then a background put behind the plastic (there is no interior and no way i will scratchbuild it!)
...the cockpit is ready for the fuselage to go together.
...just a note....the molds for the wings of this kit are from 1964.....and it shows...rough for sure.....but, progress made with some eyelets for the rigging added to the wings and walkways around the engines painted black....
....there is no decal for the horizontal stabilizer flap...and 6 separate painting steps are required...so, the decal sheet was a "painting guide"...nice to know....
...construction is underway.....and the kits age and the fact it is a hybrid of two other kits....made for some obvious gaps....finished photos of this fellow will not be closeups!
Meanwhile, the wings are ready for mounting and decals....
Meanwhile, the wings are ready for mounting and decals....
...there is a lot going on at the rear stabilizer of this aircraft.....a combination of wires and EZLine....touchup will be needed for sure....
...the big wing attachment moment...love this SundayNet jig....easy to set the wing angle just right...the top wing segment with engines attached is just roughed in here without glue....this will sit for at least a day to let the glue dry....
....it is finally time to turn this over and attach wings........the little set of wheels up front is attached by thinned white glue and will support about nothing....the photos will be very careful with this fragile part....
...this crack in the upper wing makes for an easier kit assembly for sure but how to deal with it?
...sanding and filing seems like an invitation to making a mess at this late stage....
...sanding and filing seems like an invitation to making a mess at this late stage....
....the plan...thin styrene stock painted to match that just covers the crack....solidly a decision in the "it is a model, not a replica" dept...
....gluing will start under the front of the wing and the thin piece will bend over nicely.....hopefully...

...Very close now after some bands of styrene coverup were applied over the cracks in the wings. Photos will not be featuring the glued sections on the underside of the wing. It worked so it's a winner.
...one more prop and touchup...then dusting and photos...fun trip this was....

...never throw decals away...these door images are from a Minicraft Spruce Goose kit...from decades later but it works here.....getting close...simple acetate windshield added because the kit piece was a non starter.....
All Done.....
Focus Stack (sometimes called Focus Bracket) of about 15 images.....

...if your modeling life simply does not have enough seam scraping and sanding....buy this kit.....several sessions have a dent in it but there is much to do...
the good news? low expectations for great details ......but this project is about rigging anyway...That should be fun...not like scraping and sanding...

I agree with above, it's always a pleasure to follow your builds!

I'll be following. What's not to like in a biplane airliner. A shame there are not more kits of these available.

it is time to build this fellow...but don't look too close...this is a hybrid kit with old moldings...hopefully, it will be fun to look at when done.

my dyslexia really took over at some point while adding control horns to the wings...some went on backwards...all went on the wrong side of the wing/flap intersection....sometimes it even amazes me i can walk in a straight line......the project had to be put on hold while new decals came in....
...bottom line....new slots for the replacement control horns will be made on all the wings and new decals will help hide the damage.....but, honestly, i even messed up with the connections to the tail...one side is higher than the other...dyslexia is my only excuse...hopefully, it will all be decent in the end...

Fantastic result. Very remarkable what you conjured up from the basic kit👍
