What putty do you use?
I suspect most people find the toxic Tamiya putty annoying to work with, if so, I can recommend the water based putty from Valeljo. To get 100% filling power, just top off the putty, and cut the excess off with a blade later, that way the putty won't sink in after it dried inside larger cavities.

I use the Revell putty for bigger cavities and AK acrylic putty for small gaps and just wipe off the excess with a wet Q-tip. Works pretty fine for me.
