Nicholas Bethell described the 1941 German invasion of the Ukraine as The False Liberation. “Women in the Ukraine, convinced that the German Army has come to free them from atheistic Communism, greet approaching soldiers with religious fervor,” wrote Bethell. Here advancing elements of LSSAH pass through a village, and Michael Wittmann urges the woman to go back into her khata.
