I'm almost finishing my first model and bumbed into an issue. For one of the last colours to be applied I wanted to use masking tape, but after trying to adjust, my other layers(including primer) came off. Did I use the wrong primer for this? The primer was from a DIY store. I was considering to use a different primer for my next model, because it is very thick and easely hides small details.

I'm guessing that your primer might have been a little thick. A good thing to do would be to clean the plastic on the kit with isopropyl alcohol then apply the primer but make sure to thin down the primer.

And stick the masking tape to the back of your hand before applying. This slightly reduces the tackiness. Do not use the inside of your hands, too much grease and dirt.

… and you are not alone - I also have this from time to time.
You can also use a fine sanding stick or paper to make the surface more rough which increases adhesion of the colour
