Thanks guys. I thought I'd better build this one as my father had intended to build it for my mother in the mid 70's. He built the shelf to put it on, but never got around to building the model. Mum had a minor stroke earlier this year so I thought it would be nice to get it built in case she never got to see it. Luckily she has recovered reasonably well. She is 84 and has had a couple of other minor strokes and some heart problems.

Album info

Finally built after sitting in my father's wardrobe since around 1974-75. This kit had a few issues, the worst being that the right side of the hull was a few mm shorter than the left side. The bow end needed some work to fill in some missing detail. A few fragile parts were broken before I started, and one piece was missing (luckily it was just the end of the stairwell on the poop deck so was easy to build from a bit of scrap plastic). Building the masts was a nightmare. The main mast broke at the thin part where the skinny white boom attaches. Getting the upper parts of the mizzen mast to sit at the right angle was a pain. Rigging was an absolute mission trying to attach cotton while avoiding knocking all the fragile bits off. I used UV activated glue to attach the rigging. It worked quite well and was a lot easier than CA glue which would either set instantly when I didn't want it to, or not set at all when I did want it to. Paints used were almost all SMS acrylics, with a tiny bit of Tamiya acrylic. The copper paint on the hull is SMS paint and went on beautifully over SMS Jet Black. The gold details were done using an SMS gold hyperchrome marker and Tamiya gold leaf enamel. One side had much better detail than the other.
