Buildung Log - S.M.S. König (ICM / )
Marking the decks...
...to cut out the torpedotubes.
Scratchbuilt deck from 1mm sheet so I can use my own wooden deck.
Barbette D and the 15cm-Kasematte.
Again a scratchbuilt...
...and selfmade wooden deck.
Adding more details.
Painted and docked.
The anchor-equipment has to be rebuild, as I am using my scratchbuilt, "wooden" deck..
All three in place, waiting for completing.
There has been a plate above the opening, so I´m building it scratch from chocolate-alumium.
Anchor-equipment completed.
Covers for the coal-bunkers.
Made from 2mm styrene rod.
Working on the deck-equipment.
The original 8.8cm casemate...
...and rebuilt with BMK-barrels.
All the plastik-railing has to be removed, as König had there no "solid-railing" in 1914. So I will use normal railing with canvas.
Linoleum-deck added.
More details to come...
Checking if it fits in place.
Building the turret-prototype. This is the canvas, that closed the turret against seawater. NOT a blastbag!
It´s made from foil, glued with CA.
Back of the turret with GMM-PE and a ventilation opening made from sheet.
Over the rangefinders of turret "A" & "E" there´s been a blast-protection which I´ve made from aluminium.
Ive also added a periscope and changed some minor details.
Checking if it fits...
The other turrets and superstructure parts. The turrets are neede first to position the superstructure properly.
And not to forget the "Kohlebunker-Deckel".. (*narf*)
The position of the skylights and other parts are not correct in the ICM-Kit, so that I positioned them according to my plan-set.
Another detail that missing all models I´ve seen so far are the steel-rings around turrets "A", "C" and "E".
I´ve cut them from paper. Then dryfitted, painted and glued them.
Finally all "Kohlenbunkerdeckel" are in their place. Must at least be over 60 pieces. And here it´s same as mentioned above: position, seize and number given from ICM are not correct...
This is the acutal state: Turrets in place, some details finished and the superstructures in place.
The boat-rails on the upper deck, made from heat-stretched-sprue.
The aft funnel, freed from all "details".
And rebuilding them in the right way 😉
In its position, just as the aft command-tower.
Thie upper turret was left from my old König. I guess, one can see the difference. 😉
Parts for the aft-superstructure.
The original kit platforms were way to thick so I rebuilt them from 0.3mm Sheet.
The plattform-structure completed.
Also the mast was rebuilt by using wire in different diameters.
The 8.8 got some parts from the spare-box. In the WEM-fret, these parts are inclluded.
And in their position.
The aft superstructure completed.
Th plattforms included in the kit got the wrong shape for S.M.S. König, so I had to cut them from sheet too.
Starting to built the forward superstructure...
The actual state of the project.
Completing the forward superstructure, piece by piece.
Mast is set, becuas one of the platforms fits around it. Also the searchlight platforms are in place.
Details of the funnel.
Mayor problem of the GMM-PE-Set ist, that there is not enough railing of the type needed for the bridge section.
The "Friedenstseuerstelle"
The "Fockmast"
Replacing the moulded parts with wire and GMM pe-parts.
The crane-wires added from hss.
Securing the crane.
The 15cm Mittelartillerie. The barrels are from BMK.
The support for the bridge-wings has received its wiring.
Footropes in place
I added the missing parts for the center shaft.
Some railing and the ladders added.
The boats, given in the kit are not all in correct number or the correct type. According to my archives I decided to built the two kutters located in the davits and also a large kutter and a motorboat kl. III.
Of course a kutter needs a waterbucket. 😉
Added the other bits n pieces like rudders a.s.o.
Rear anchor and propellers are also added meanwhile.
Decal-desaster.
Self painted version.
Second Kutter finished
Railing completed.
This proves, that ICM and all others have been wrong about the boatcradles... (right bottom of the picture)
Building the "Nachtrettungsboje"
In place
Uper position-lights
"Ruderlagenanzeiger für Tagfahrt"
Torpedonet-stowage
The two boats I want to use in place, just to look if the fit.
Detailwork on the torpedonetstowage...
sSome Tamiya-tape with marikings on it, so that everything´s in the right position, afterwards...
On board the König. Luckily I can use it on both sides. 😉
Cutting over 120 pieces of them from the PE-frame. Each is about 1.5x1.5mm small.
And in place.
The kit part ist to short, so I decided to replace with scratchbuilt parts from copperwire.
The torpedonet itself, made from a present/gift decoration.
...and positioned wiht white glue.
Actual state of the project I
Actual state of the project II, only some minor things to make... ...I hope.
Making the wire for securing the torpedonet. 1st step: making rings from copperwire
2nd step: cutting them into half
3rd step: postioining on the net. After this, I´ve painted them with Revell 91.
As one can see on some photos, showing König at the bouys in Kiel or Wilhelmshaven, there´s an eyelet on the bow.
Finished eyelet. I´ve added the ladders at the bow-anchors.
Making the "Ruderlagenanzeiger für Nachtfahrt" on the mainmast.
Positioned...
...and painted.
Practicing to paint the crest of emperor Wilhelm II, worn at ships stern in peacetime.
Enough practice...
...let´s go for the "real thing".
Finished. All of this was necessary, as there are now accurate decals of photoetch-parts available.
Sorry, my english´s not good enough, so from here in german: Halterung für die Spieren auf halber Höhe aus Sheet und Gussast.
The ladders for the cutters had to be scratchbuilt, as there are no fitting PE-parts. So I used some heat-stretched-sprue.
Painted with Tamiya deck-tan for the ropes and revell 17 for the woods. THere are two of them for each cutter.
Actual state of the model. The König itself is nearly finished, only the complete rig is missing. It will ba added after the boats and their cradles are in position.
Scratchbuildung the boat-cradles, as the form, given in the kit, isn´t even close to the original one´s..
Testing if the boat fits in...
...and if everything fits on deck.
Adding some canvas, just like shown on the photos.
Some work needs to be done on the "Motorboot Klasse C"
Both together
And in position
Actual state of the project. Only the rigging of the torpedonets and the masts ist missing... But first I need to do some research on this.
Starting of the rigging. First with the "Fockmast", and the "stehendes Gut".
Same procedure with the "Hauptmast".
Adding the missing parts of the masts. I´m placing this late, bacause other wise, I would allways have ripped them off during work. 😉
Naxt step is the rig between the masts, used for radio.
First one in place. I´ll bring them later to right size, with heat, when all four of them are in place.
Finished, only the paint is missing. (see next picture)
Adding the "laufendes Gut" for the signals a.s.o.
Starting with the rigging of the torpedonets. Quite a bit complicate, so it takes a while...
First of all everything needed for using the rig has to be in place. (Made from coper-wire)
One side finished. Hard to see... 😉
So here´s a macro-picture...
This is, what the bow looks like.
Both sides completed. So its almost finished. Only the flags, the figure and the socket are missing, but will be added soon.

They´re "very special"😉
It is not possible, to built a correct state of one of the ships out of the box.
The mast fits not to the 8,8.Kasematte or the torpedonet-derricks, a.s.o.
But they´re still the only kits of a Linienschiff...

Another step ahs been done.
The anchor-equipment has been completed, some smaler parts have already recived paint and a bit of extra work.
And the forward superstructure has been particular completed.
Of course with some scratchbuilt details😉
Hope you like it.

Thx, Christian.
There´ll be surely more to come.
I´ve already finished turret "E" and started with the aft "superstructure".
I think the next pictures will follow this weekend. 🙂
Btw:
I can spend so much time on my model since I´m sick at home.
Thx to the navy... 🤔

Solche Sachen einfach selbst machen.

It´s scratchbuilt from sheet, the support is from copperwire.

I use tissue, reduced from 4 to 1 layer.
And then I glue it to the railing with woodglue.

Therefore I´m back at school (Elektrotechniker Meister) I´ve only made little progress.
The recognition markings on turret B and D have been completed, even though the decals have been a complete desaster.
I´ve also completed the railing and the second Kutter.
Meanwhile I´ve recognized, that I´ve made a REALY BIG MISTAKE... 😮
Just like everyone, that has build a König-class so far: 😉
The boatcradles are not running on two rails, as suggest by ICM and everyone else.
Pictures prove, that they´re running on ONE rail, which is embed in the deck.

Thank you both.
@CHristian: But I´m only able to do this in german...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

@Holger: Du kannst sie Dir dann ja beim Stammtisch in Uplengen begucken. 🙂
Danke Euch beiden. 🙂

Nearly finished.
Only the boats and the rigging is left on my "to.do"list.
Hope you like it.
------------------------------------------------------------
Die Zielgerade ist in Sicht. 🙂

superb job so far... enjoy the last steps, although they are not the most easy ones I think...

Allright.
Meanwhile if finished the boat-cradles an the two boats themself.
The "Kutter" got a canvas, the "Motorboot Kl. C" was a bit more modified.
PE-parts for windows, stearing wheel, rudder, a.s.o. Some bulleyes were added, wooden decks, ...
So the ship is almost finished.
The only thing missing is the rigging of the masts and the torpedonets.
I need to do some research in this, as almost every plan is showing König after the rebuiling from 1916. 🙁
Hope you like it. 🙂

So the König is nearly finished. The missing rig is added, which took a while, because it ain´t as easy as I first thought.😉
The last steps will be the flags, the figure and the socket.
Hope you like it so far.

some fine work at the rigging... some mighty fine work... me like a lot.... do you use copper wire for the complete rigging? or also streched sprue or something else?

Thank you, Bart.
The complete rigging is made from heat-stretched-sprue.
Usualy I use matching colors, so that I don´t have to paint it.
But this time the black one didn´t work, don´t know why...

Building log of my version from ICM´s S.M.S. König - kit in 1:350 scale.
Using GMM and some WEM photoetch-material.
I will try to build her in her first state, just at the brick of war.
In this album you can find the updates of the projcets progress.

Hope you like it. 🙂
