You always get me excited Rui. 🙂
As your research abilities are just fantastic. 👍
You mentioned that there could be some coloured images of this famous event. ?
And I saw the name of the reference magazine, and I must see if I can tap that source too. 👍
Thanks again Rui. 🙂

Hi kezza,
I also colect colour photos from WW II, but mainly the German side, as you could see in my MT albums.
The magazine I mention is IMO one of the very best about the theme. No doubt about that. Worth every penny 👍

Yap, I hope your trucks didn't sink in the Pacific, or went to the Filipinas instead...
Another thing with some of this colour photos is that I don't know where they where taken, and I suspect that all the abundant light dust could be in south Italy or even Sicily???
Anyway, you said that you collect them (and I hope they can also serve other mates), so I will post some more later. Remember that I don't use internet for this and only use my Bibliotheca or archive, in the hope that they are less known or easy to find, ones😎

Hi Blaubar
So I see, you are well documented, that's good.
(Have you found in your library or do you know some more Books/Magazines that have this model? It would be nice for me not to lose time, searching for them in my lib.).
I thought the problem was to figure out how they took the ammo from the rear compartments?
If I find more info I will post on the MT4.
Best wishes

I've made a Tamiya 251/1 - Ausf C, years ago ( Tunís - Panzer III N - 251/1 | Album by mig (1:35) ), and the kit brings that cylinder and in the instructions they call it water tank. 😎
In the new last image ( a 251/3), it seems that it's covered with a rectangular box...

NP.
The engine was the standard six-cylinder watercooled Maybach HL 42 TUKRRM petrol unit, but I'm not sure.
(It had a bore of 90 mm. and a stroke of 110 mm. giving a displacement of 4,171 cc. Output was 100 b.h.p. at 2,800 r.p.m. It had an overhead camshaft).

Kezza, I found it.
It was not for the motor.
Many nations evolved armoured ambulances for recovering wounded personnel from front-line combat areas. The Sd.Kfz 251/8 was designed as an armoured field ambulance suitable for four stretcher cases or up to ten sitting wounded. The normal seats and equipment brackets were removed and replaced with folding stretchers and seats. All armament was removed. and large Red Cross markings were applied as per the provisions of the Geneva Convention. A water container was situated over the transmission housing, and medical supplies were carried.

I was totally unaware that it performed a medical role, and that throws a whole new light on the vehicle's origins. :-O

Thanks, Kezza.
Yes Mate.
They had the special proposed one as ambulance but sometimes, because of the shortage of SdKfz 251 /8s, a number of standard /1 personnel carriers were converted for ambulance duty by removing the MG31s and applying Red Cross markings or flying a Red Cross fag. The extemporaneous ambulances usually can be identified by the presence of the forward MG armour shield, without the gun. The true /8 ambulance had the entire mount removed and, in addition, the rear top plate was often removed so that Stretchers could be carried from the vehicle more easily.
Thanks, Kezza.

Hi EnsignExpendabl,
Thanks for your advice.
I always like to see, what colour drawings show, mainly when they are based in well known contemporary photos like in for example some Concord books.
When they are fantasy I use them together with real thing photos, and they may help with camouflage patterns.😉

Brilliant. 🙂 So, they don't look "Out of place" to you. meaning they look OK for what they are. ?
That was one thing I could not figure out in the kit, but being the mechanic I am, I naturally assumed that they were oil coolers, as 'indicators' was the LAST thing I would have thought of. hehehehehe 🙂 The yanks had a mechanical 'hand' that was popped out when making turns, especially when they were driving in England, on the left side of the road. 🙂
