Completing the Airfix 1:600 HMS Suffolk
![Album image #1 Album image #1](/albums/img/0/9/1/777091-10800-29-720.jpg)
This is the completed model. I now only would have to pop it into its base cutout, close any remaining gaps and be done.
![Album image #2 Album image #2](/albums/img/0/9/2/777092-10800-19-720.jpg)
But I wasn´t that happy with the rather heavy-handed texture of the wave effects.
![Album image #3 Album image #3](/albums/img/0/9/5/777095-10800-58-720.jpg)
![Album image #4 Album image #4](/albums/img/0/9/6/777096-10800-46-720.jpg)
So the thought kept nagging me, especially as I was quite happy with the ship.
![Album image #5 Album image #5](/albums/img/0/9/4/777094-10800-73-720.jpg)
So I decided to take the plunge and start the base afresh - something I never do with a completed model, for fear of damage.
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/0/8/3/777083-10800-52-720.jpg)
I copied the base cutout onto a fresh piece of foam baord, which I had already treated with the gas torch to produce the wave pattern. That makes for neater borders of the cutout.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/0/8/4/777084-10800-84-720.jpg)
I then stippled the base and sprayed it a tad darker than before.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/0/8/6/777086-10800-96-720.jpg)
I had something fresh in mind for the wave effects, and made a test with really heavy body gloss clear acrylic gel. I applied it with a paintbrush.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/0/8/7/777087-10800-69-720.jpg)
It wouldn´t cure clear beyond a certain layer.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/0/8/8/777088-10800-77-720.jpg)
I found that a piece of sponge would work better than drybrushing the wave effects.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/0/8/9/777089-10800-13-720.jpg)
The result of my test.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/0/9/0/777090-10800-65-720.jpg)
In the end, the gel´s shrinkage made me apply it three times, with intermittent application of white to add some more depth. But I think it worked out.

Ah the sponge seems like a nice idea. I will have to try remember that for trying to make an ocean diorama myself. 🙂

Album info
Right before completion, I found I didn´t like the original base. Ouch.
