![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/5/7/0/1409570-72957-34-720.jpg)
Raised panel lines are a big minus.
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/5/7/2/1409572-72957-51-720.jpg)
Dragon kit's fuselage doesn't fit well on anything. It is closer to the older drawing.
![Album image #32 Album image #32](/albums/img/5/7/4/1409574-72957-99-720.jpg)
Panel lines follow the older drawing exactly.
![Album image #33 Album image #33](/albums/img/5/7/3/1409573-72957-22-720.jpg)
Lindberg's fuselage seems to have the length right and most proportions, but it is higher than should be.
![Album image #34 Album image #34](/albums/img/5/7/5/1409575-72957-22-720.jpg)

FROG kit is lacking the compressor of the engine, so I casted a new one from an AZ kit part. Mold made using Blue Stuff.
![Album image #48 Album image #48](/albums/img/7/9/0/1410790-72957-14-720.jpg)
Planet models' cockpit is so good but lacking gunsight, so I scratched that quickly. Also it should be sanded smooth now.

![Album image #66 Album image #66](/albums/img/6/1/4/1430614-72957-29-720.jpg)
Dragon kit cockpit was lacking side panels, so I scratched them. Forgot to take the picture before painting...

Special Hobby and Dragon kits' interiors painted and varnished.
![Album image #68 Album image #68](/albums/img/5/3/5/1432535-72957-79-720.jpg)
I suddenly remembered that the gun barrels need to be improved.
![Album image #69 Album image #69](/albums/img/5/3/4/1432534-72957-92-720.jpg)
Dragon got the Master's brass barrels. For the SH-kit I used injection needles.
![Album image #70 Album image #70](/albums/img/5/3/6/1432536-72957-42-720.jpg)
Dragon got Eduard's photo-etched pre-painted belts while SH got its own decal belts. SH-kit didn't have nose gear window so I drilled a hole for it and filled it with Micro Kristal Klear.

![Album image #75 Album image #75](/albums/img/0/9/0/1442090-72957-35-720.jpg)
Dragon's model will have an open canopy. The clear part is a bit too wide, or I squeezed the fuselage too narrow.
![Album image #76 Album image #76](/albums/img/0/9/2/1442092-72957-71-720.jpg)
SH got Eduard's masks while AZ model's mask is self-made.

Dragon's engine parts on the left and SH's on the right. SH's parts are more accurate.
![Album image #86 Album image #86](/albums/img/9/3/4/1446934-72957-32-720.jpg)
These two cooling air intake scoops looked bad due the molding restrictions...
![Album image #87 Album image #87](/albums/img/9/3/9/1446939-72957-67-720.jpg)
... so I made new ones from a styrene sheet.
![Album image #88 Album image #88](/albums/img/9/4/1/1446941-72957-42-720.jpg)
Dragon's BMW 003 will be visible (open cowling) while SH's engine is basic closed. I figured to add wires for exhaust temperature sensors from 0,2mm lead wire.
![Album image #89 Album image #89](/albums/img/9/4/2/1446942-72957-90-720.jpg)

![Album image #90 Album image #90](/albums/img/9/4/3/1446943-72957-85-720.jpg)
AZ-model's A-2 got its wings, but the trailing edge has a huge gap.

![Album image #94 Album image #94](/albums/img/8/2/4/1450824-72957-82-720.jpg)
Dragon's BMW got its exhaust nozzle...
![Album image #95 Album image #95](/albums/img/8/3/0/1450830-72957-18-720.png)
...that had huge gaps between the nozzle and the engine frame. It is fixed now with 0,2mm styrene sheet.
![Album image #96 Album image #96](/albums/img/8/2/6/1450826-72957-63-720.jpg)
![Album image #97 Album image #97](/albums/img/8/2/7/1450827-72957-55-720.jpg)

![Album image #98 Album image #98](/albums/img/8/2/5/1450825-72957-36-720.jpg)
AZ's D-variant has good enough fit , but aligning of the wings is mediocore.
![Album image #99 Album image #99](/albums/img/8/2/8/1450828-72957-28-720.jpg)
Just realized that wings should be added before engine. Fortunately the SH-kit has so good fit that I could add the engine lastly.
![Album image #100 Album image #100](/albums/img/8/2/9/1450829-72957-69-720.jpg)

![Album image #101 Album image #101](/albums/img/6/7/5/1455675-72957-81-720.jpg)
Dragon's elevator's span is too wide so I got an idea of using AZ Model kit's elevator, that is almost direct copy but has correct span.
![Album image #102 Album image #102](/albums/img/6/7/6/1455676-72957-79-720.jpg)
AZ Model's A-2 got also its H-tail. It was very laborious.
![Album image #103 Album image #103](/albums/img/6/7/7/1455677-72957-58-720.jpg)
C-model got the first V-tail.
![Album image #104 Album image #104](/albums/img/6/7/8/1455678-72957-68-720.jpg)
Special Hobby's H-tail was the easiest and the most accurate. 5/5. No need for any putty.

Stall strips added on Dragon kit. SH-kit already has them.

RLM76 under the AZ model A-2

Masking upside and painting.
![Album image #135 Album image #135](/albums/img/3/9/2/1489392-72957-70-720.jpg)
AZ Models's A-2 painted with AK's acrylics. Maybe best RLM81 compared to Vallejo and especially A.mig.
![Album image #136 Album image #136](/albums/img/1/8/9/1493189-72957-26-720.jpg)
Dragon's BMW 003 engine needed more details and I wanted to be careful with the pipes. I took a picture of the model part, compared to the real engine and drew missing parts.
![Album image #137 Album image #137](/albums/img/1/8/3/1493183-72957-66-720.jpg)
Some small plastic parts added and some metal ones.
![Album image #138 Album image #138](/albums/img/1/8/4/1493184-72957-17-720.jpg)
1/3 of the wiring done.
![Album image #139 Album image #139](/albums/img/2/8/3/1504283-72957-26-720.jpg)
I wanted some heavy weathering with a dot filter. I'm using white, yellow and green.
![Album image #140 Album image #140](/albums/img/2/8/2/1504282-72957-43-720.jpg)
Landing gears in their places.
![Album image #141 Album image #141](/albums/img/2/7/1/1504271-72957-90-720.jpg)
Removing masks were not so simple as it usually is, because my liquid mask got stuck like a contact glue. After some quick research I tried to remove it with blue tack and it worked! No need for any solvents.
![Album image #142 Album image #142](/albums/img/2/7/2/1504272-72957-73-720.png)
Just when I thought the model would be ready it turned out to be tail heavy... My "quick" fix was to add tungsten balls into front wheel bay and the cockpit. The total weight of the balls was approx 2,5 grams.
![Album image #143 Album image #143](/albums/img/2/8/5/1504285-72957-92-720.jpg)
Canopy back in place and the Hobby Boss Volksjäger is ready!

![Album image #146 Album image #146](/albums/img/6/3/4/1508634-72957-91-720.jpg)
Lindberg is ready soon! Decals applied from Printscale sheet.
![Album image #147 Album image #147](/albums/img/6/3/3/1508633-72957-19-720.jpg)
I'm pushing this forward by weathering the landing gear after they have been glued in place.
![Album image #148 Album image #148](/albums/img/0/9/8/1509098-72957-73-720.jpg)
This model already had some lead weights in the nose, but it wasn't enough! >🙁 I had to add two tungsten balls into the nose gear bay.
![Album image #149 Album image #149](/albums/img/1/0/1/1509101-72957-80-720.jpg)
Lindberg Volksjäger is ready!

![Album image #152 Album image #152](/albums/img/3/5/6/1511356-72957-53-720.jpg)
Frog got decals from Printscale ark.
![Album image #153 Album image #153](/albums/img/3/5/8/1511358-72957-35-720.jpg)
I forgot that Frog's own decal sheet was decent with stencils so I added them,
![Album image #154 Album image #154](/albums/img/3/5/7/1511357-72957-14-720.jpg)
AZ model A-2 variant got its own decals.
![Album image #155 Album image #155](/albums/img/6/7/4/1522674-72957-86-720.jpg)
Similarly to Lindberg I just added black panel liner, then matt varnish and lastly removed masks.
![Album image #156 Album image #156](/albums/img/6/7/5/1522675-72957-45-720.jpg)

![Album image #158 Album image #158](/albums/img/6/9/5/1535695-72957-51-720.jpg)
AZ-model's landing gear coming up. The main landing gear struts were removed from the sprue, smoothed and then glued into a sprue for easier painting.
![Album image #159 Album image #159](/albums/img/6/9/6/1535696-72957-11-720.jpg)
Planet models is getting more paint. Aluminium surfaces were masked with tape and Revell's liquid mask.
![Album image #160 Album image #160](/albums/img/6/9/7/1535697-72957-73-720.jpg)
I took a gamble and painted the AZ model A-9 with new AK's acrylic primer. It seems to be mask proof but it easily scratches.
![Album image #161 Album image #161](/albums/img/6/9/8/1535698-72957-94-720.jpg)
Added Vallejo's primers and preshading.
![Album image #162 Album image #162](/albums/img/0/9/3/1536093-72957-47-720.jpg)
AZ model's landing gears are very tricky.

![Album image #165 Album image #165](/albums/img/0/9/6/1536096-72957-37-720.jpg)
AZ Model A-9 is getting wild colors.
![Album image #166 Album image #166](/albums/img/0/9/8/1536098-72957-72-720.jpg)
Some yellow in A-9.
![Album image #167 Album image #167](/albums/img/0/9/5/1536095-72957-21-720.jpg)
Planet model's A-8 got its main colors and the masks were removed (not from canopy ofcourse).
![Album image #168 Album image #168](/albums/img/0/9/9/1536099-72957-76-720.jpg)
"Seam line putty" added with brush onto A-8.
![Album image #169 Album image #169](/albums/img/4/5/3/1537453-72957-34-720.jpg)

Planet Models' landing gear is a straight copy from Dragon's kit.
![Album image #177 Album image #177](/albums/img/1/4/4/1539144-72957-90-720.jpg)
A-8 and A-9 both got decals. In the background the AZ model's C-model had black primer and aluminium paint. It will be a bit similar to A-8.
![Album image #178 Album image #178](/albums/img/8/7/5/1547875-72957-98-720.jpg)
Now I noticed that the landing gear doors of AZ model don't fit in their place.
![Album image #179 Album image #179](/albums/img/8/7/9/1547879-72957-84-720.jpg)
As a resin kit Planet Models' A-8 is very tail heavy even though I added some lead weight into the nose gear bay...
![Album image #180 Album image #180](/albums/img/8/7/7/1547877-72957-96-720.jpg)
C-type progressing and I'm planning some templates for plywood decals.

AZ model D-type got grey primer that was a mix of Vallejo's black and white primer.
![Album image #187 Album image #187](/albums/img/6/3/8/1549638-72957-71-720.jpg)
C-type was painted, then gloss varnish and then experimental plywood decals.
![Album image #188 Album image #188](/albums/img/6/3/9/1549639-72957-90-720.jpg)

![Album image #194 Album image #194](/albums/img/1/6/5/1553165-72957-47-720.jpg)
C-type got its decals and D-type is getting more colors.

![Album image #197 Album image #197](/albums/img/8/9/1/1553891-72957-79-720.jpg)
D-type mostly painted and masks removed.
![Album image #198 Album image #198](/albums/img/8/9/2/1553892-72957-64-720.jpg)
I messed up with C-type. I had applied "filter" on top of plywood decals and then I put masking tape on them for some minor fix. Decals are intack but the "filter" got peeled off.
![Album image #199 Album image #199](/albums/img/1/7/1/1555171-72957-55-720.jpg)

Masking SH kit
![Album image #213 Album image #213](/albums/img/8/4/9/1577849-72957-19-720.png)
I was suspicious towards the idea of using decals for the nose stripes, so I painted them. I sacrificed one Printscale's stripe decal for mask making.
![Album image #214 Album image #214](/albums/img/2/2/2/1581222-72957-25-720.jpg)
More misuse of decals as masks 😄
![Album image #215 Album image #215](/albums/img/2/2/3/1581223-72957-49-720.jpg)
Most decals added. Stencils are mostly missing. Decals are mix of SH's, Dragon's and Printscale decals.

Awful and strange disaster happened, when Humbrol Decalfix stripped some paint. It is fixed now.

Weathering ongoing and SH's model is getting landing gears. They fit nicely.
![Album image #220 Album image #220](/albums/img/7/8/3/1585783-72957-22-720.jpg)
Brake cable is added lead wire.
![Album image #221 Album image #221](/albums/img/8/0/6/1588806-72957-54-720.jpg)
Again the model was too backweighted, but luckily I could add some tungsten weights from the engine hole..
![Album image #222 Album image #222](/albums/img/8/0/7/1588807-72957-39-720.jpg)
Dragon's model also needed more nose weight. I could add some tungsten weights inside to the nose before adding the nose gear.
![Album image #223 Album image #223](/albums/img/8/0/8/1588808-72957-11-720.jpg)

![Album image #225 Album image #225](/albums/img/8/1/0/1588810-72957-33-720.jpg)
Landing gears are in place, weathering is done and also matt varnish applied. So it is time for engine installation.
![Album image #226 Album image #226](/albums/img/8/0/9/1588809-72957-15-720.jpg)
Dragon's canopy masking worked well.
![Album image #227 Album image #227](/albums/img/8/1/2/1588812-72957-53-720.jpg)
Canopy support rod was stolen from SH kit because the Dragon's PE-part was too flimsy.

Great to see this comparison, thanks for that 👍🏻
I have the dragon kit in my stash, which was criticized for having faults if I recall correctly.
Following this 👀

Very interesting! I think nothing will come close to the one from Special Hobby.
I've built two of these and they went smooth. Nice details.
But who knows…I didn't check out the other kits in detail.
We will see here 🙂

The SH kit is the newest tooling, and most their (newest) kits are really nice 👍🏻

Thank you and welcome, gentlemen! I will try to remember to list all the faults the kits have in some point. This far it seems that the SH kit is the best in detail and shape, but this is partly because other kits are older and had bad references.

Interesting...
I recently scrapped the Dragon kit and bought the Special Hobby one. I hope i got it right.

All 4 AZ models? How many kits are you making? I thought you were doing 7 different kits at the same time. So I'm confused. Are you doing 4AZ kits and 6 other kits as well?

Thanks for this work 🙂
I would just say that Salamander is not the name of the He 162 : it's Spatz, like on the Special Hobby boxart. Salamander is the name of the manufactury construction operation to build the Volksjäger and Volksjäger is the aircraft program that the Spatz won. Very simple indeed when you know it ^_^

![](/profiles/img/72957-816-s.jpg)
@Skywalker yes I'm going to build all 7 different kits and also 3 other AZ kits (as variants A-9, C and D) so total of 10 models.

Welcome aboard, mates! 🙂 I finally got to start the Dragon's and the SH kit's cockpit and other interior parts. This far it seems that HobbyBoss, Planet Models and AZ Model have copied partly the Dragon kit.

I have been very busy lately, but atleast one milestone milestone achieved as all models are at this state with (almost) completed cockpits and fuselages.

Reminds this famous photo from underground factory... 😉 That's quite a challenge not to mix the respective parts, I suppose.

S M, I couldn't resit anymore, I bought a He 162 yesterday. Thanks for that. I went for the Special Hobby one, is it a good option? I know I should have waited a bit more, but I couldn't.

Thanks, mates!
@podkon that photo from Seegrotte was my inspiration ;D
@Carlos Good choise! This far I could say that Special Hobby kit is the best. Not much details need to be added.

Thanks, Nils! 😄 I got this idea originally from another modeler who built simultaneously five different 1/72 Bf-109s kits.

Great idea to use different kits of the same plane, following with interest.

At last some new pictures. I have been very busy lately, but now I had some time to airbrush HobbyBoss model.

Thanks, Fritz and Sergej! Well my mig paints are almost two years old so some of the pigments are stuck in the bottle.

I've been looking at your project since the start. That's a lot of work so far and it's looking really good!

Thanks, Marius! This really is a lot of work and lately I haven't had enough free time to work with this. Fortunately it is mainly just painting and decals left for the models (except this Dragon's engine and landing gears...)

After a long pause finally some progress images! I got the HobbyBoss Volksjäger ready! Only one workday left and then my vacation starts!

Those rivets look awful, I guess it was acceptable in the 60ies 🙂
Still nice to see one this old being built, it turned out great 👍🏻

I agree with the rivets. I didn't bother to remove them all neither fix some that got removed when sanding seam lines.

I actually like the fact you didn't remove the rivets, gives it that vintage look 🙂

I agree with Jan.
Plus it shows you the "raw" kit, since you're building to compare them.
So no enhancement. 😎

Revell/FROG's Volksjäger is now finished. Similar treatment as with Lindberg's one.

Thanks, Lukasz! It was indeed inspired by Schwalbe (atleast the color of the putty) and by late He 162s like W.Nr. 120231 "White 6" that was hurriedly assembled.

White 6 is one on my to do list, 🙂
Great job again, I'm looking forward to more 😀

Planet Models' A-8 Volksjäger is completed! It was so tail heavy that I had to glue it onto a pad. Now half of the He 162s are completed!

Now all AZ model's Volksjägers (A-2, A-9, C and D) are completed! Only two kits left.

Great job! I admire your perseverance too 🙂 (There is some funny effect on the open part of the canopy on photo #228 😄 )

Thank you all! It took about 9 months and the most boring thing was making the landing gears, but otherwise it was fun. I even got some new what-if ideas that I hope to get build soon.
