January 3, 1968 through August 18, 1968: The VA-56 Champions flying A-4E Skyhawks embarked with Carrier Air Wing 9 on USS Enterprise CVAN 65 to WestPac and the Champs fourth Vietnam combat cruise. It was the third combat tour for Enterprise.
While embarked in USS Enterprise CVAN 65 and en route to Yankee Station, the Enterprise was ordered to the Sea of Japan for operations following the seizure of Pueblo (AGER 2) by the North Koreans on 23 January.
The A-4E included a major upgrade over previous versions, including new Pratt & Whitney J52-P-6A engine with 8,400 lbf (37 kN) of thrust, strengthened airframe with two more weapon pylons (for a total of five), improved avionics, with TACAN, Doppler navigation radar, radar altimeter, toss-bombing computer, and AJB-3A low-altitude bombing system.
