I had not built a kit in over 25 years. Even then, it doesn't really count because it was part of a project supervising others, so I did not build whole kits. Therefore, I really have not done a kit in close to 40 years!
So now I have the time and resources. My stash has grown over the past couple of years, and I finally decide to build something; an old Lindberg 1:72 Dornier Do 335. How hard could it be?
The reason I chose this scale, topic and manufacturer may be of interest:
First, the majority of planes I built before were 1:72;
Second, the Do 335 is an interesting aircraft; and
Lastly, the Lindberg box came with two full kits and a partial kit inside!
So I decided to build the partial kit for practice. It has most of the bits, except for landing gear and doors. No problem. The kit comes with a stand, so this bird is going to be flying.
I found the Lindberg kit a bit inaccurate and with relatively poor quality, but not bad. The green styrene is ok, but a more neutral colour would have been better. The recessed panel lines are nice, but it is covered in rivets, but thankfully they are very, very small.
I decided to take a bit of an odd approach to the build and put together a few assemblies and paint before putting the fuselage together. I had a lot of sanding to do and touch-ups as a result. But it made masking easier for the late war splinter camouflage.
