2024 Model Build #2 - 1/24 Porsche 911 '88 Turbo

This build turned out much quicker than the 959 I finished just before. It took about 3 weeks to complete. The kit goes together really well but does miss out on some details. I found a source online for some models to improve the detail and a friend printed them in resin for me. That allowed me to add brake discs and callipers to improve the look. I also designed my own speakers and power window switches and printed them in PLA to give the doors a bit more detail. I was going to add seat belts, but they came up very fragile and I couldn't work out the best way to mount them.

The colour is SMS Aqua Marine and I chose it to avoid another Porsche in Red/Yellow/Silver. I don't normally deviate from the box colours, so this was a change. I also changed the interior colour to make it more interesting by using red and black. I added red flocking for only the second time, and once again it wasn't great. I need to work on it to get a more uniform coverage in future.

The body is painted in SMS acrylic lacquer with Vallejo details. This proved very handy when the details needed fixing as I could simply wipe it off with a bit of water. In between I used SMS 2k clear for the first time. Whilst it went on with quite a bit of orange peel, after some sanding and polishing it came up brilliantly. It's easily the best finish I've created to date. I did burn through the clear and paint in a few bits but you'd be hard pressed to notice the touch ups. The black behind the door is also painted on instead of using the kit decal. I scanned the decal and used it to cut out a mask. That resulted in a consistent finish with the rest of the black paint.

The lessons:
- Using PVA to add flocking is probably not the best solution. I've seen videos suggesting enamel paints are better, so I might try that in future.

The firsts:
- 2k clear - resulted in a much better finish
- 3D printed parts - both resin (brakes) and PLA (door speakers and switches)
- Adding the blue strip to the top of the front windscreen

The good:
- The finish on the body, my best yet, especially on a metallic finish.

The bad:
- The flocking wasn't great and touch ups to the interior left some less than ideal marks.
- Cutting masking tape on the model created a number of knicks that are noticeable if looking up close.

I have a couple of models on the go, but have also just received a Porsche 918 Spyder which I'll do in an even more 'out there' colour.
