Interflug Iljushin IL-62

November 1989: two weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall I travelled to Moscow on a trip planned long ago under entirely different circumstances. A bus brought us from West Germany to the East German International airport Berlin Schönefeld. Seeing the awe in the face of the people crossing the death strip into West Berlin passing the GDR border police men still on guard was a sight to remember.
In Berlin Schönefeld we boarded an Iljushin IL-62 and flew to Moscow. I didn't know the IL-62 back then but immediately liked the elegant lines of it with its four engines at the rear. I remember them being in good shape and well tended and the Interflug livery bringing out the best of it's design.
When I finally got hold of Interflug decals and could acquire the Zvezda kit for a good price at the Moson Model show this new project was started.
