Overpainting dark green/yellow enamel/thinner wash. Bit too wet. The masking tape sucked up a lot of it leaving dark drying edges, which actually look ok!
![Album image #6 Album image #6](/albums/img/4/5/3/765453-32952-95-720.jpg)
Stripping out back to the underlayer.
![Album image #7 Album image #7](/albums/img/4/6/7/765467-32952-27-720.jpg)
Im fairly pleased with that. Will probably add a yellow wash later on to soften things.
![Album image #8 Album image #8](/albums/img/4/6/8/765468-32952-88-720.jpg)
My one real gripe with Roden kits. Flashing over everything.
![Album image #9 Album image #9](/albums/img/4/6/9/765469-32952-83-720.jpg)
Starting on the underwing surfaces. Some nice ribbing so i'll skip the masking tape.
![Album image #10 Album image #10](/albums/img/4/7/0/765470-32952-24-720.jpg)
Well im very impressed with the amount of detail Roden pack into this 1/72 Rolls Royce Eagle engine.
![Album image #11 Album image #11](/albums/img/4/7/1/765471-32952-79-720.jpg)
Tis tricky though. Use the camshaft V section to get the blocks lined up correctly. Its a very loose fit and needs to be lined up by eye.
![Album image #12 Album image #12](/albums/img/4/7/2/765472-32952-97-720.jpg)
![Album image #13 Album image #13](/albums/img/2/2/1/776221-32952-85-720.jpg)

![Album image #15 Album image #15](/albums/img/3/2/6/791326-32952-91-720.jpg)
The Roden decals are a little thin and very brittle. You can see in the roundels how the whites are uneven over the underpainting. Not sure how to fix that - underpainting i guess. Any suggestions ?
![Album image #16 Album image #16](/albums/img/3/2/7/791327-32952-32-720.jpg)
A few minor issues joining the fuselage together. The internal supports for the lower wing need to be pushed up really tight to the fuselage interior. Otherwise, as i found, there can be a little overhanging. Worth checking with a dry fit. A little sanding sorted things out.
![Album image #17 Album image #17](/albums/img/3/2/8/791328-32952-77-720.jpg)
Sanded up well after a little repainting. Dropping in the gun well frame.
![Album image #18 Album image #18](/albums/img/3/3/1/791331-32952-81-720.jpg)
Time for some weathering. Not a lot of surface detail to bring out. Have seen a few reference photos and they did get pretty filthy. Just a wash of dilute black/brown then hard brushed off.
![Album image #19 Album image #19](/albums/img/5/4/0/791540-32952-55-720.jpg)
I think for 1/72 thats a pretty detailed engine.
![Album image #20 Album image #20](/albums/img/5/4/1/791541-32952-32-720.jpg)
Now we get to the interesting bit.
![Album image #21 Album image #21](/albums/img/2/2/4/800224-32952-60-720.jpg)
Leaving gluing the secondary engine supports till last really helped. It allows a bit of flexibility to line up the two engines so they are straight(ish).
![Album image #22 Album image #22](/albums/img/2/3/9/800239-32952-49-720.jpg)
![Album image #23 Album image #23](/albums/img/2/5/0/800250-32952-32-720.jpg)
The uprights stuck in pretty well. Took a few attempts and collapsed wings.
![Album image #24 Album image #24](/albums/img/2/5/1/800251-32952-30-720.jpg)
Now this is where you really need to let the glue harden off for a day or two. This joint supports the entire very long wing weight. I got lucky with the first wing.
![Album image #25 Album image #25](/albums/img/2/5/2/800252-32952-92-720.jpg)
And on with the second wing - looking good.
![Album image #26 Album image #26](/albums/img/2/5/5/800255-32952-44-720.jpg)
Damn it! I said two days! Bit of a disaster on wing no.2. I thought joining the wings to the centre section might be problematic.
![Album image #27 Album image #27](/albums/img/2/5/6/800256-32952-95-720.jpg)
Into intensive care. Be patient.....(2 days and its been so hot probably three).
![Album image #28 Album image #28](/albums/img/2/6/0/800260-32952-21-720.jpg)
One week later.....Happy with that. Not perfect but i dont think i could improve it much. Theres a slight twisting overall but its not too offensive. Phew!
![Album image #29 Album image #29](/albums/img/2/6/1/800261-32952-68-720.jpg)
Those wings really were huge. You wonder how it ever got off the water. Amazing they could fly for up to five hours. Sub hunting. Quite a few used by RNAS.
![Album image #30 Album image #30](/albums/img/8/0/2/814802-32952-12-720.jpg)
![Album image #31 Album image #31](/albums/img/6/2/6/815626-32952-56-720.jpg)
Still some sagging in the wings. Its not too bad and to be expected with such a long wingspan. Next time i will add some metal rod.

Hi every body. Yes a tricky subject. I was tempted by the WnW kit but would need to move house to display it. As they now seem to have gone bust anyway not much chance. Hopefully they will pick up again when the world becomes sane again. Welcome aboard.

Hi Erik. Im gonna cheat a bit on the rigging. I just wrap them around the uprights rather than sticking each one. Tried this awhile back on the little Airfix 1/72 BE2c and it worked well. Its just too fiddly at 1/72 to anchor every line. Mind you I have seen a few that have managed this with superb results. Im just too lazy these days. [img1]

Thanks Gordan. Looks like a stick of sea side rock. Youd certainly spot it in the ocean pretty easily.

Hi Mike 🙂 Can You tell me something more about building this kit? It's in my field of interest and sooner or later I will get one 🙂 (I'm looking for Roden 019kit with this red-white twisting paintjob😉 )

Thanks Laurent. Hi Jan and Rene. Yes sure will do. I will caption photos as i go along. Happy to try an answer any questions. So far im enjoying it. My second Roden kit so i'm getting used to their rather vague diagrams. Its all rather imprecise and prone to interpretation - but thats all part of the fun and skill required.

Spectacular build - excellent colors & all the rigging more complex than on a small sailing ship... 👍

Wow. You obviously like that one! Thank you all very much for your very kind comments. Yes, a challenging build but turned out alright. Still think the wings droop too much, but couldn't find a decent work around. Next time!! Added a few more pics today. A great kit from Roden.

website says that they have suspended activity due to covid. but they plan to resume when situation is normal.... so not busted. or at least not yet.... that will be sad if happens.

Yes it is sad about Wingnut. It certainly looks like they have gone for good. Staff have been laid off and absolute silence from Weta. Lets hope somebody buys out the stock and re-establishes the brand. A very ready and willing audience awaits Peter!

Thanks very much Predrag and Erik. Used EZline for the rigging. Makes it sooo much easier.

Wow Mike. Certainly not one for a beginner! This looks complex and challenging but ultimately amazing. Hats off, sir.

i really wanted to get one of those WnW kits... but i was hesitant due to the price... now that they are "collector" item, a quick search made really clear that the prices out there have gone through the roof.... and the few with "cheap" prices, are obvious internet scam shops (be careful with those).... c'est la vie.

![](/profiles/img/32952-618-s.jpg)
Thanks a lot Gary. A little experience certainly helps with Roden kits. They are a bit different from other makes with a lot of balancing/wiggling required. I think a jig might help, especially on this one with those enormous wings.

Didnt know that Spanjaard. But I guess a lot of former Wingnut customers are probably buying them all up. Thats great for Roden as I understand they are now going to start producing more WW1 kits. I got mine on eBay and if anything this is less than i paid for it. Snap one up!

I would say yes. But the Roden is 1/72 whereas the Wingnut is 1/32. Hence the rather large difference in price. Wingnut kits are/were just amazing.

and congratulations again for a stunning model. hard to believe it is 1/72!

Thank you. A tough build. Really wish i had strengthened the main wing joints. I could not get them level. Next time!

Very well-done build Mike. I have this kit in my stash and as always seeing a beautiful build such as this gives me motivation.
