@Tom: First I painted the whole area in a very dark brown (German Camo Black Brown from Vallejo). Then I stippled on different rust tones (lighter brown colors) and some different medium gray tones tinted with a bit of blue. I concentrated the rust tones along the edges and away from the exhaust. In the center an towards the exhaust I used more of the gray tones which represent bare metal. The transition between the bare metal and the area where the paint remains was lightly dusted over with black pigments.
