Building the Revell Wind Class icebreaker part 1
I started with the kit and the GMM PE set. Moreover, I used various generic PE by Saemann, mainly railings, handwheels, ladders, inclined ladders and eyebolts.
I printed whatever images I could find, decided on a timeframe and tried to determine the vessel´s fit.
This Copyright does not mean the original year the kit was introduced, which seems to have been around 1960. As frequently with kits that vintage, some details are clunky, bot overall they´re not that bad at all.
One major difference was the bridge which needed a complete rebuild.
Including the wind deflectors.
I also needed to add fresh planking to this deck afetr removing the molded on detail.
Some periodical motivational mockups help me through a build. The large hole where the gun turret was needed covering up.
My modifications meant that a lot of the PE customized to the kit wouldn´t fit anymore, hence the need for generic items.
At this point of the vessel´s service, one crane and landing craft had been removed, and the flight deck enlarged.
The telescopic hangar was made from styrene stock and CA-infused paper.
Some of the subassemblies.
The mast needed a complete rebuild, if only for stability. I made fittings to attach the yards to the mast from PE stock - much better than gluing them.
Another motivational overview.
The two very nicely etched radar arrays.
