At mid-day on 27 November 1941 during Operation Crusader, the British and Commonwealth bid to push back the Axis forces and relieve Tobruk, the 15th Panzer Division reached Bir el Chleta and met the 22nd Armoured Brigade. After fierce fighting throughout the day, both sides were near exhaustion and disengaged to regroup.
