From ugly duckling to swan: Fairchild F.91Nou: 10 August, 17:27 1:72

In view of the start of this build, I was tempted by the following motto: "From ugly duckling to swan": the kit offers a number of interesting challenges, but gives an idea of the potential both as a model and as a representation of a true aircraft beauty! I will try my best to make the swan appear....
A first challenge: roughly moulded parts, poor fit and a wing that wants too much in a positive V-position.... A second challenge will follow in the form of a Vacu canopy that has turned yellow with age; this will give me the opportunity to try out the doing in Vac-canopy myself. More of that next time...

Great, Roland!
I would like to see the steps you follow when making the Vac-canopy.

Thank you for your interest, I appreciate it!
Cuajete, I'd be happy to show you a few photos of the progress of the construction and application of the self-moulded Vac canopy. It seems to have produced a reasonable result so far....

This look like an intriguing project. I am super impressed with your vacu-forming! But what's the story with the masking tape pieces on the work mat? Are they leftovers from previous projects?

Me 3, I have to see that! Still procrastinating mine 😄
Thomas, are you considering getting rid of the decal with my support perhaps? 😉

(And for everybody else with knowledge about the different versions of the Yak-12, yes, I am aware of the differences between the A-version in the kit and the R-version used by the Hungarian People's Army. But since I am not able to scratch build the entire wing and empennage structure, let's just call it artistic license.)

Admiring your skills, and learning from your problem-solving, Thomas. Transforming an A-Model kit adds to the challenges 😉

Thank you Michael, Nicolas & Bruce for your interest and compliments! This kit is actually not quite as bad as some other Amodel kits I have built - the designers have created some pretty nifty solutions here! If anything, it is a bit unforgiving - make one small mistake and you can be sure that it will keep coming back to kick you.

Wunderbarer Modellbau. Ich hab das Modell auch noch liegen und genauso wollte ich es auch machen. Mal sehen, wenn ich groß bin. 😉

Yes Thomas, I don't think you get any easy builds from Amodel. But with some work you get a nice and rare model. I realy like your progress. 👍

Bruce, Lukasz, Cuajete, Nicolas, thank you! Yes, Amodel is actually cool in that they take a chance to make models outside the ordinary. Who else would design a model kit of a strange and ugly little high-winged Soviet aircraft instead of another Stuka, Tomcat or a Spitfire?

Roland thank you mate! Cuajete, yes, this is the best gloss coat I have ever tried. It levels out to an absolute mirror shine (at least if it is applied to a perfectly smooth paint layer). This model ended up with a bit of orange peel effect at some places, so it is not absolutely perfect, but I can get away with it.

Thanks Gorby 🙂
It's a nice kit and being 1/16 scale is larger than a 1/35 scale King Tiger. Plenty of plastic for your $$$

Thanks mate 🙂
Have since added a little paint chipping (back to the grey base coat), and applied the decals etc which are going to take a few applications of Micro Sol to settle down over the turret details. Will update the album when there is a little more to see.

Thanks Gary 🙂
Cooler weather temps have slowed progress this last week but paintwork has been sealed and the decals are done now.
Ready to make a proper start on the weathering and dirtying it up a bit ahead of final assembly.

A "light tank" of the German Afrika Corps WWII. Something that our Kiwi troops (NZ Division) would "butt heads" with frequently during the early years of the war. But, given it's light armour and lack of a main shell firing gun... quickly became obsolete when the Allies (including NZ) pulled their finger out and put bigger and better tanks on the field. I have a ton of respect for these German crewmen.

Excellent paintwork and weathering. You´ve done the big scale justice in every way!
