Thanks for the excellent photos Jay, I was also quite enamoured with the Austin Champ as well – I've not seen or heard of it before. I'm just going to find out more about it. 👍

Thank you guys.
The kit looks good in the box. But on closer inspection, I noticed a lot of burrs, even though I bought it as soon as it came out. When building it, serious fitting problems became apparent in some places. Nothing fits together properly, especially in the area of the engine cover, especially if you want to assemble everything closed.

In a flashback scene, the West German pilot Hoover (Kfir) saves the Englishman Benditz (A-4E) from certain death after a MiG-21 gets him in his sights. In gratitude, Benditz offers Hoover a bottle of his favourite German wine, a '76 Steinberger.
It's a neat little scene in the Area 88 manga. Hoover later dies, so Benditz (after being discharged) orders a bottle in Paris and drinks in his memory. At first, the French hotelier is a bit offended that someone would order German wine in France... but she does have a bottle stashed away regardless.
The whole chapter is a touching sidebar story actually. We've never seen Benditz up to that point (he's basically created for the story), but this is an unknown story involving the secondary, but well-known, Hoover. The story follows Benditz's successful discharge from Area 88 after serving his full 3 year mercenary contract and his trip home. Everyone calls him lucky because he's never even been hit, his A-4E is in pristine condition (unlike everyone else's). Then, minutes after finally getting off the plane in Heathrow airport in London, he's stabbed in the chest during a random mugging over a couple of pounds and dies on the floor in a puddle of blood. Meanwhile, back at Area 88, everyone is guessing what "lucky Benditz" must be up to, back in the "real world."

Ok… might've got ahead of myself on some of the painting, so I'm clawing it back a bit. I'm going to use the same "paint over the decal to blend it" method I did (much more painfully) on my 1/144 F1 project. It mainly just takes a bit more planning up front on placement and colour selection.
7 July 2023, 06:03
![](/profiles/img/26441-134-s.jpg)
Stage one complete - carefully mask decals and paint over them... only time will tell if the tape will pull the decals off. I'm hopeful that so long as the tape doesn't go over the edge of the decal, some careful removal will do the trick.

Bringing this one down off the shelf of doom too… It's only been a year and a half. Luckily I can refer to these WIP pictures to figure out what's next. I think w're pretty close to being done though. Was able to finally mount all three planes. I'm a bit worried that the placement doesn't really tell the story of the A-4 being rescued from the MiG-21 by the Kfir... but there was limited real estate to work with, so I did what I could.

Thanks Nicolas, the canopy will be a challenge. I sanded out the blemishes on the kit part but there are stress fractures and a crack going through it. I'll have to see if I can vacuform it but there is a ball turret behind it that would be a different thickness and I doubt I could vacuform a ball turret.
9 February, 20:57
![](/profiles/img/46074-728-s.jpg)
After putting the ball turret together I realized that it would be very risky and way too much work to try and vacuform it. So it looks like I will have to use the damaged canopy because I don't want to mix and match glazing thickness.

Some of my thoughts. Most of my models are jet fighters, and WWII propellers started from the last year. Therefore, I am not very familiar with many excellent tank kit brands.
Hasegawa is the brand I make the most. Their jet fighter product line is comprehensive, with decent shape and good fitting. What attracts me most is they constantly releasing new decals, which are simply irresistible. However, Hasegawa's tools are relatively old, and the details are not rich enough. Although they have great product release plans, I hope they can develop more new tools, rather than just new decals.
Revell, FlyHawk, and GWH, I've tried some of their kits, excellent quality.
Trumpeter, Zvezda, and Academy also have many excellent kits but also some mediocre ones.
Zoukei-Mura I have some in stash, not started yet. Their Super Wing Series is very appealing, rich interior details and great design. Interestingly, the packaging style and the runner design is very similar to Trumpeter's, and it said made in China in the box. Perhaps it is OEM by Trumpeter?
Eduard's WWII fighter products and rich accessories are also my favorites.
Tamiya is always a the most reliable choice with consistent high quality. Unfortunately, their 1/72 jet fighter products are from Italeri (except F-16CJ?), which seems to be due to an agreement between the manufacturers in Fukuoka.
As for Aoshima, I've only made a few 1:24 cars, the topics are good, and the details are rich, but sometimes there are fitting issues. In comparison, Tamiya's cars are smoother to build.
I haven't tried Airfix yet because not too many distributors in China. Last time I traveled to Europe, my suitcase was filled with cosmetics and clothes, but next time I will do my homework in advance because I really like their 1:24 propeller fighters.
Lastly, Matchbox is a brand I built a lot of when I was a child, and it's no longer around, but every time I see its classic packaging, it reminds me of my childhood.

You know guys who is the most curious on what and how I am gonna do? Me 😄 My philosophy is "just start, ask questions later". It is the most enjoyable approach, you encounter problems on the go, you find solutions, try new techniques and create new ideas. Which is very rewarding. And in the end you have a nice result. Not a perfect one, but one you can look back on and smile or shake your head...

Okay, for the Blackbird lover, this kit is a truly amazing aggregation! I really like this. I grew up around Beal AFB in California. There is no aircraft more magical or mystical than the Blackbird. Your care in addressing these fit issues is very much appreciated! A 1/48 scale Blackbird is a very large kit. Most will always have trouble finding a place to keep it. But with these new parts, I think it makes building this kit a true challenge and worth all the efforts. Your handling of the main wheel well bays is spot on! Trade offs between building and painting are very well done with your suggestions! This Habu is going to look fantastic! Bravo Zulu!
