You can also use some photo etched set but once everything closed, you won't see something: only the pilot canopy can be install open.
That's why I prefer to add some simple details and make a « good » paintjob.

You can also take the zvezda kit.

I just realized that this is the Italeri mold from the 90s and not the old Revell from the 70s. I was wondering why you had recessed panel lines.

Probably, my most ambitous project yet. Im going to try and recreate a sinking of a submarine with depth charges, droped from a destroyer. Everything in 1/700 scale. For this, i bought the Battle of the Atlantic set, wich comes with a J-Claas destroyer, a type VII German submarine and a Short Sunderland amphibous plane.

Sub already done! It was small but detailed. The PE parts were really a challenge. Some weathering it's all it's left.

Today i wanted to work on how i want my diorama to look. So i hoped on blender and downloded some free assets and placed them together to see how i want it to look. I think for the quantity of resin and the accuracy of the scene this is going to be more or less the final desing of my diorama.
21 October, 19:55
Miguel Vaquero
Starting with the destroyer. Awesome detail too but a million tiny parts. Good challenge for sure

I don't know if I'm going to finish the Sunderland😞😞. The fitting between the fuselages is too bad and fragile, using putty is not going to do the trick this time cause it will hide a lot of the nice detail and I will not be satisfied. I'll think about how to do it but there's not much hope now😓
27 October, 18:20
Miguel Vaquero
To get my mind of the plane. I decided to destroy the sub.it turned out perfect, as I intended
27 October, 20:05

Not really where you are headed with your diorama, but this might give a bit of context to my 'historical' comment Miguel.

"A Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Sunderland (of No. 10 Squadron) made the type's first unassisted kill of a U-boat on 17 July 1940.[3]"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_Sunderland

Flying Porcupine
"Two examples, in particular, stand out: on the 13th of April 1940, a Sunderland operating off the coast of Norway was attacked by six Ju-88C heavy fighters – the Sunderland shot down one JU-88, damaged another so seriously it had to quit the fight, and drove the rest away.

A 1943 encounter with JU-88 was even more savage when a Sunderland from 461 Sqn RAAF was attacked by eight JU-88C long-range fighters. Despite the Sunderland being heavily damaged with most of the crew wounded, the Sunderland downed three attackers, damaged and drove off the rest and made the 560-kilometre return journey to Britain where the heavily damaged aircraft was beached at Cornwall."

10Sqn RAAF Photos -
adf-serials.com.au/sunderland.htm

Keep up the great work on these tiny models.
Cheers

PS The nickname 'Flying Porcupine' was probably just a bit of allied propaganda as there's not a lot of evidence the Germans ever referred to a Sunderland as one. It's a lot like the Japanese with the Beaufighter and Whispering Death.
28 October, 01:12
Miguel Vaquero
Thanks for all the info Jay! I really appreciate it. And they could fit very well with this diorama. They actually performed anti submarine operations from GB and they actually sunk 6 U-boats.

I'm sure if I'm able to fix my Sunderland, I'll paint it with their colours. I loved their history

I've already glued the U-Boat to the acrylic sheet. As the background for the diorama states that the aft reserve torpedo exploded, to hide the cables I made some bubbles coming down from the exploded compartment. It's not the best but it's better than to have some cables seen.
4 November, 11:46
Miguel Vaquero
The acrylic sheets mold is done. The ship is now lifted with nylon cord to place on to the resin without sinking. And the u-Boat is secured in the container.

Next step, the resin pouring. I've never been so nervous about a model.

Good luck with the resin Miguel.

That bubble on the bow is killing me. It's right on the surface of the resin but I don't know how to get rid of it, and if I'll make it worse if I try something

Great job, very impressive. 👍
5 November, 21:00
Miguel Vaquero
Thanks Guy!

I ended up making and painting the Sunderland, flying the colors Jay suggested. The end result, I think it's salvageable. I'm wondering if I should put it in the diorama. The downside is ill have to stick it with some transparent acrylic rod. It's going to be visible but not too much. I think if I mask the bottom part of the rod, the one closer to the water, as a droped depth charge from the porcupine, the result might not be bad at all.
What do you guys think
6 November, 18:04

I find it better not to pay attention. I just added 5 more and haven't finished a damn thing in forever. Is there a way to see what all got added to the stash in THE STASH?
28 December 2023, 03:02
Ellis Smith
Woah I need to buy more kits to keep up with you lot, mines a very small stash by comparison.
28 December 2023, 05:22
Martin Oostrom
Welcome, my fellow addicts 😄

Bossy, if you add the date bought and the price when adding a kit to your stash, you get two 'benefits'...
1) Your projects show a total cost 🙁
2) In the stash, on the right in blue, you see a date in a blue bar, that's your date bought/sold.
28 December 2023, 07:04
bossy122
Yes, I noticed the dates. Looks like I acquired 29 kits and only finished 4, none of which were started this year. Awful.
28 December 2023, 07:59
Spanjaard
good i have never added those details 😄

28 December 2023, 14:26
Bill Newcomer
Martin, the date method is how I determined my count for this year. I am generally pretty good at adding inventory. Cost? I don't want to know. Especially since I have purchased a lot of paint this year.
29 December 2023, 06:12
Martin Oostrom
Bill, Paints are priceless to me! I love the Molotow stuff, but at €29 for 30ml, thats too much. I'll wait for a discount somewhere.
I know that a €50 kit needs about €10-25 in aftermarket stuff and paint.
29 December 2023, 08:01
Bill Newcomer
Have you tried Green Stuff World Chrome?
30 December 2023, 01:33
Martin Oostrom
Nope. I did a quick google search and we have one supplier over here and 17ml costs €7,99 with another €7,50 for shipping.
Alclad is cheaper, but oh so fiddly to get just right. Que the Molotow!
30 December 2023, 18:38

Sorry to hear about your tanks, Ken. I've heard nothing but bad news, about Rustoleum clear. Thankfully, we don't have it over here, but I've had the same thing happen, with a cheap clear, I once used. Basically, it was too hot, for the paint. This kit reminds me very much of my Hideout Truck, but the frame is longer on mine. I did enjoy the build though, despite it being a bit of work. Keep going mate, you're doing an awesome job! Remember to test fit all the plumbing, before you commit to glue? It's a lot of fingers and thumbs! Just find that easiest way for you and use the directions as a guide, not the bible. 👍

Well the sign says 30 km à l'heure. Clearly not German but French. So is it really Cologne ? Cologne was pretty much in ruin at that time. Could it be Strasbourg ?

Thank you mates! I`m glad you watched my pictures! --- Andreas if I really were "Miniature Rembrandt" (as Robert kindly suggests) I would say the hands in my manufacture built the dios, while I myself added only a few final brush strokes. In fact I am only "Miniature Neuling" and have to make all the builds with my own hands and eyes. As I am rather a slowhand it all takes its time. That`s why not all of my albums show new builds. The album "Road accident" is my latest build indeed, finished 2 weeks ago. The previously shown albums "Winter games 1944" and "After the storm" were built more than 20 years ago. I have written exact dates in the project description. --- Olivier solved the riddle: As always I photographed the diorama in my garden, overlooking my hometown of Regensburg. What you actually see on the picture is the Gothic Regensburg cathedral which is a little smaller than the Cologne cathedral. The Regensburg cathedral is a copy of the famous French cathedrals. So I imagined the story of my dio taking place near a French city with a Gothic church in the fall of 1944. Arne and Olivier I appreciate your attentive watching of and thinking about my work.

Chris you shure have the skills (as your builds show) and patience is not required indulging in a passion! And - important for me - there is life outside the box: sports, reading, music and travel. A good combination is listening to the radio while working on a build.

Almost looks like the tragic crash (there are no accidents) that took the life of General Patton. You are obviously skilled, I for one, would love to see that scene memorialized in scale. What do you guys think?

Cheers,

Thanks Anthony, Mirko and Michal! Paul is right: Reenacting Patton`s deadly crash would be an appropriate project for Anthony. My little story tells of a British animal rights activist avoiding the sheep crossing the street and hitting the telegraph pole. Fortunately he survives and suffers only a commotio cerebri enabling him to smoke his cigaret while his American comrades take care of his car.

Neuling
Many thanks, mates! Glad you like my album. - Laliscale, the wrecker was not a fun build. The plastic material was of inferior quality and did not get hard after being glued together. I reinforced the chassis and suspension with an additional structure drilling holes and sticking in small metal rods. It worked. As long as it´s invisible I don´t care much about it. Main thing is: The model looks realistic. - Gary, right now I´m working on a Hemtt wrecker. Slow, slow, slow. - Desert Marlin, I really should see this movie again.

You know, I have been racking my brain trying to figure out who your models remind me of and it occurred to me- Francois Verlinden. The style of weathering, the posing, and the subdued light of your outdoor shots all point to him at his best. So many of your models remind me of an Italeri catalogue from the late seventies, when he did all the photos. I remember as a teenager marveling at the realistic appearance of the models and settings. Always get a nice feeling looking at your albums.
28 October, 11:04
Neuling
Stephan, you are right. Verlinden's publications and products brought me from toyland to modelworld. A pity, his stuff was pretty expensive, so I tried to scratchbild as much as possible. And I did not stop learning, from scalemates for example chipping.

By the way: will your book be available in Telford in November?
10 June, 08:04
William Adair
Hi Michael, I'm not sure. It should be out by then but I don't know if any sellers will be stocking it. I live in Australia unfortunately, so Telford is well outside my maximum range 😢
11 June, 22:42
William Adair
Added the large control wheel to the pilot's cockpit from soldered wire and heat curved sprue. I like the little brass hub in the middle 🙂
15 June, 09:52
Skyhiker
You seem to have really good control over your soldering. What tools do you have? That control wheel is impressive.
15 June, 16:59
gorby
The many years training to be a jeweler probably helps. 😄
15 June, 17:07
William Adair
@Skyhiker I have an inexpensive soldering iron from an electronics store. It is nothing special, but the best thing I have is liquid soldering flux. Using that allows the solder to grab the surface and stick without requiring too much heat or flooding the area with solder.

@gorby Being a jeweller helped at first. But now I am finding that the modelmaking is helping me be a better jeweller! 👍
23 June, 12:51

Outstanding work! The book is on order 👍
24 June, 12:57

Wow, what scale👌, l struggle to build a 1:72 without breaking of a tail wheel or antenna 🤣.
Really nice n interesting subject 👍👍
7 July, 23:13
Skyhiker
Where do you get your blueprints?
7 July, 23:17
William Adair
@Michael Kohl, I made an album about the wheel back in January, showing the stages of construction. Spoked wheel test, 1/144 | Album by F_IV
@Skyhiker, Windsock Datafiles provide the best drawings. I also use the 3-view drawings from the Wingnut Wings kit for some areas.

You're a wizard, William... this is all far beyond my sight abilities, not only my skills...
24 September, 10:55
Ludvík Kružík
Phenomenal project! What you are doing here in this mini scale is amazing. 👍 You don't see this kind of detail work too often even on larger models.
I suppose giving fleas horseshoes isn't a challenge for you. 😉
24 September, 11:04
Alec K
Excellent progress. I have finally received, and am about halfway through reading, William's excellent book. To those interested in how he does what you see in this album, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. I am certainly planning to incorporate many of his techniques into my own scratchbuilt projects. How he does what he does in 1:144 scale is still a mystery to me (although the book supplies hints 😉), but they are applicable across any scale really. Well done!

@Alec, I'm so happy that you are enjoying the book. I just got my copy the other day too 🙂

The scalpel blade really shows the scale, be no good for my chunky hands, l stick to 144 to my small scale 🤣🤣
Good quality for it's size., No reason to run out of room Building at this scale 👌😁👍

4 October, 16:35

Lol, right across the road from Giant Coin World 😛
Hoping to be ready to start the rigging in a few more weeks (if all goes well). Added a new header pic, showing where it started, versus where it is now .

Speechless.
How do you hold/fix such tiny parts to work on them?
Wow, just wow. Oo
30 October, 10:46
Michael Kohl
Truly amazing.
30 October, 11:01
William Adair
Hi Erik, cheers! Sometimes I just use a tiny dab of water to hold parts while I am test fitting them or getting ready to glue. The capillary action holds the parts while I'm swapping hands from tweezers to glue. Since I started doing that, I've spent 75% less time on the floor looking for lost parts. Other times I make a simple holding jig from scrap plastic to align parts. It saves a ton of time and frustration.
