Haha, thinning plastic is one of my favorite upgrades to a kit. I also like thinning the edges at the back of wings of aircraft (whenever that is more realistic). Some older airplanes have a thicker edge at the rear I think. There is this 'curse' of working with 1 mm thick plastic that shows up in all kinds of places, making edges and seamlines weird, unless smoothed over and edges thinned in places. 🙂
An effective way to take off plastic in a controlled way, is to use a sharp blade and scrape, still takes some time, but I like how the blade is flat and yields a flat surface. Sanding sponges also works, but tend to leave a subtle dent in the plastic if one isn't gentle enough.
