Today I build the bridge wing supports from 0,3x0,5mm flat and 0,3mm square styrene profile. The WEM PE parts fit not well to my new bridge so there was only the way to make them scratch. Just thinking how to build the wind deflector in front of the bridge bulwark.

The air deflectors along the solid bridge bulwarks are really prominent. I did not use the WEM PE parts because they did not fit to my scratch build bridge. I add new ones made of plastic stripes 0.3x0.5 mm resp. 0.3x0.8 mm. I thinned them a little bit in their thickness using a sharp modeling knife shaving carefully along the stripes. The PE railing fit well using one of Flyhawks RN railing set. The canvas cover was imitated by using PVA glue. I also add an opening for a ladder aft on the bridge deck. A railing is still missing here!

After a while off my Flower I?m back again. The open bridge is nearly finished. Some voice pipes, a ladder and a railing to cover the access, a compass and the base for the Typ271 radar lantern is still in place. There is also some progress with the wheel house and the stack, some brass parts for railing and steam pipes are added as well as a signal lamp on top of the wheel house. I also add the small ready ammo lockers on the gun platform. The fiddly PE parts from the White Ensign Models PE set are really nice and give a final touch to the platform. There is some more work this small boat so I will go on. Happy modeling, Christian

@Barry, at the moment there are three kits in scale 1/350 available (Mirage Hobby), HMS Zinnia and HMS Anchusa both long forecastle but early bridge and HMS Spiraea, long forecastle and a bridge similar to the one I scratch build on my Polyanthus. I think they will make a late war corvette with an extended bridge next year. About your question, it depends in which fit you?d like to build HMS Asphodel. As build with short forecastle or later in the war with extended and modified bridge. At the moment there is no kit available with a short forecastle but you can build a late war Flower with an enlarged bridge while using White Ensign Models PE set. The set contains a late war extended bridge as well as radar lantern for Typ 271 radar etc., next to this you should use any reference available to add necessary modifications as I did on my build. But never mind what you?d like to do all three kits from Mirage compared with WEM PE set are a good start for a lot of modeling fun on this special topic Flower Class Corvette!

I would want to built the Asphodel in 1941/1942 as my father served on her during that period, before he trained on radar and then transferred to another ship. I'll do some more research on these corvettes but your info will help me start. It would be a future project, after I've built (some of) my current ones! I like 1:350 scale, as it's manageable - I find 1:600 too small.

Christian - thanks, I'll have a look at that forum. My dad transferred to HMS Belfast in 1942, he was on that ship until either 1945 or 1946. I'm hoping to build the Trumpeter kit of the Belfast soon. I don't normally build ships but am currently building the Yamato and am enjoying the challenge!

Just a small update. The mast is finished with its prominent Type 286 radar atop. The mast was is a brass part from BMK, the radar from an WEM PE set. The lookout is a modified kit part, the lantern is made of round styrene. Next to this I add most of the bits and pieces like bollards, vents, davids, winches, etc. as well as two new splinter shields next to the main gun position. The separate modules like bridge, gun platform, mast are only added to take a photo for an overview. It is really amazing how many details are in this tiny little kit. I have to take care not to overdo detailing with some additional details! Hope you like it! Cheers, Christian

Back on this one, some ready lockers with additional depth charges are placed on deck. The parts were scratch build because of rudimentary kit parts. The same with the boats, I replaced them by two 16? boats from Admiralty Model Works. The boat cradles are scratch build, because the WEH PE parts did not fit well to the Admiralty Model Works boat. The 24? searchlights are L?Arsenal parts, both searchlights will be placed at the back of the bridge wings. Take a look to the small figures. They are from North Star Models and state of the art in scale 1/350! Last I replaced the brass rod on both cranes by a thinner one. Next is to add some vents and additional details along the deck and upper works, but more soon. Cheers, Christian

During the week I worked on some small vents. The kit parts has to be drilled to represent them open. Next to this vents I scratch build some double T-vents. They are really prominent and where often seen on different places aboard Corvettes. I carefully put the main parts sitting next to the vents to ensure a perfect fit of all of the parts. All comes well together until now and I can?t await to finish the rest of the parts to start painting the model! Cheers, Christian

Well Jens and Mathias, that was not my suggestion to raise the bar and discourage you to build the model;-( Thomas Schmidt build a very nice HMS Zinnia without adding scratch build parts. You can look at his model in Modell Fan August 2013. So go on and build the kit!

After I have nearly finished my HMS Montgomery I go back to my Flower class and made a bit progress with all the bits and pieces that hast o be added before I start the paintwork.

I build some new davits because the kit parts are over scaled and did not fit well next to the small lifeboat. Some brass and styrene – finished.

A blast bag is added to the gun barrel using PVA glue. I will see how it looks after the PVA dried completely and may have to add a second layer.

Railing on the fore deck is in place. The openings are free for the bridge support frame and the life boat.

Davits in place. Looks much better than the kit parts.

Some bits and pieces along the aft deck house. The pump left is scratch build too.

Some more work to do as soon as possible but paint work will start soon.

First thax mates for your kind comments and your interest. @Sven, me too😉 I try it for the first time and do not know how it will look, but I think I will add only a subtle weathering to the hull plate contours.

Rest of the basic work. I added some flag poles aft of the stack and the superstructure added the railing to the aft super structure and build two lifeboat racks port and starboard between the DC throwers. Now the model is ready to paint.

Thx, Christian. Just start one and try. I start building ship models for 8 years ago and learn with every new model some new things. Some from experiments and some from watching what my ship modeling mates did and do. I came from planes and tanks, most of the techniques are the same. The only difference are a lot of small parts and rigging. Plastic, Styrene profiles, Resin, PE parts etc. are close to the ones you can use with planes, tanks etc. ! Would be fine to see some more mates building ship models😉

Hi Christian! Beside some U-boots and one E-Boot I did not do anything in a smaller scale than 1:144. I tried some 1:700 kits, but was unhappy with the results. So these kits are on my "to finish list" as many others. One day Iwill give them a try.

Now the paint work starts. I thought for a while what brand of color to use. As usual White Ensign Models Colorcoats should be a good choice but according to availability outside the UK and some smell (Enamel paint) I try to change to Vallejo Acrylics. There is one disadvantage with Vallejo, no correct color tone for all Navy colors!

In a long chat with my close friend Frank Spahr we discussed color tones for HMS Belfast Admiralty Pattern with some small different meanings. But we were much close with our Choice. No I made a test to match WA (Western Approaches) White, Green and Blue as close as possible. For each color I need two basic colors and white to tone it down. I made a color chip for my own to be close to the color I found out for later projects.

White – Model Color 006+Model Color 151+Model Air 001
Blue – Model Color 064+Modell Color 067+Model Air 001
Green – Model Color 074+Games Color 025+Model Air 001
There should be one part of each of the basic color and two parts of white (Model Air 001)

The green and blue is a bit darker than the WEM CC, but this was in my mind. I will give this now a try!

Today I cleaned all the parts with lighter fluid using a brush and a Q-Tipp. Once dry and clean I applied a first coat of light grey to get a uniform basic surface color for the white. I will let it dry for a week before I go one with the white basic color.

Some more progress with the paint work. Just add the white color. It was not so easy as it looks. I sprayed all in all one basic layer and three more layers of different shades of white. I used Vallejo Model Color 002 Foundation White and 004 Off-white. I'm really confident now with the tone and look forward to add the WA Camo scheme.

Next to paint the model I restart the water base. I added some more layers of tissue paper and cotton wool to sculpt waves and spray. Yesterday I have added a layer of Xtracolor gloss varnish with the result of some yellowish shining on some of the wakes. I reworked this today using some more cotton wool and this time Future. I'm looking forward till it dries completely how it will look.

@Dirk, I'm still in progress to find My Way. Current status is this way:
- Material, Styrofoam Board min. 30mm thick, rotary brass wire brush, rock drill, modeling knife, sanding paper , nose mask and a place where you can make a lot of dust
- make a basic plan on the Board, ship position, line of waves and wakes etc.
- first shape the display using the knife (basic shape) and the rotary brass wire brush for rest. While using an adjustable rocket drill you can shape the surface really smooth
- sand down the highlights a little bit
- add wall paint in a stippling motion
- add a first coat of the basic color and seal it with high gloss varnish
- start detailing the waves and wakes (tissue paper and acrylic gel, for details cotton wool)
- seal the base with high gloss varnish
- Last add the model to the display and seal the seam line with cotton wool and acrylic gel

Except the black underwater hull the main paint work is done. I'm always critical with my own work but in this case I'm really confident with the result.

As mentioned before I first used Vallejo Acrylics and had to mix the colors. That went out quite well and the color look as I want that they look.

Next I start detail painting, bridge and stack are nearly finish as well as the PomPom platform. More progress soon.

@Lionel, I use Tamiya tape and paper cards and toilette paper to mask the scheme. I is quite easy with these straight schemes, but seemes to be more tricky with curved schemes. Take a look here:

Now the main paint work is done. Last I add black, mixed with black grey for the lower hull. Corvettes were often painted black instead of hull red. I had to repaint the green because I made a mistake in the height of the waterline and so the green does not meet the blue in the right position. But that went out quite well because the Vallejo paint dries out really fast and I can mask the black only a couple of hours after I paint it.

She looks quite nice so far – next detail painting and weathering.

Today I paint the decks. I usually add most of the parts before I airbrush the model, so with this model. This way avoid handling all the small parts during the paint and weathering process but requires a lot of patience and a steady hand to hand paint the decks.

I used a mix of Vallejo Model Color Blue gray dark and bright no. 164 and no. 58.

The model is ready now for a coat of Future to seal the paint and get a smooth surface to add the decals.

I'm just deliberating about the weathering not to overdo it, because of the detailed hull plating. Thank you George. There is only one way to build ships, just try and do it! I start building ships in 2005 after a long time with scale 1/35 military vehicles and scale 1/48 wingy things. It took some time but practice makes the master.

Thx for asking about it Mathias. Just a weathering is missing before I can assemble the kit finally. A new base is in progress because I do not like the one I previously build for this kit. I'm not really sure about the weathering because of the planking etc. So I paint a sample to try it, but I have no fun to do this at the moment and before I ruin the previous work I better left it aside.

After 4 years ago I'm coming back to the Flower class. Just wondering how the time runs!? Anyhow, washing and weathering is almost done, as well as the assembly of nearly all the parts and sub assemblies. A new water base is done, still the final coats of high closs varnish and acrylic gell are missing. Final touches has to be done on the Flower, like some more subtle weathering, the crew and the rigging. I hope it will not need some more 4 years to finish her😄

The crew is aboard and the base got it's first layers of high gloss varnish. Although it is much to warm for modelmaking I try to make small step by step. Next is rigging, I have to cool down for that cause it is the most challengingin in modelmaking for me.

Mhh, the pencil. Well Gentlemen, I started this work in pre-pencil times, so there is no photo available showing any progress on this lil ship. But because of a lot of requests I'm honored and pleased to present my mock up paint model together with my pancil collection and a ruler to allow you to make an own sight of it.

By the way, thank you all for your encouraging feedback. It means a lot to me! Unfortunately we still have temperatures day and night far away from my personal comfortable temperatures of approx. 20° C. So I'm not in the mood to go on at the moment - it is to f...... hot here, up to 36°C outside during daytime and 24 - 26°C in the house the whole day!

This year at QMHE my ship building champion mate David Dolton ( he manufactures the fins you see on all surfboards, and made a million out of it) and, has some new resin kits of all kinds of RN Ship, Russian, Chinese, American, and all other navy type vessels he imports from China he now has on sale, and from what I saw last year in the way of subject material he has available, I won't be short of subject matter. 🙂
I will get all the info on what David is making available and pass the link on to you all here. And from what he showed me last year, the detail is something else. 👍

To hot here in northern germany also. In my 3 weeks vacation i stayed at home to do some work at the house and in the garden. and of course on my models...but what can i say it's awful f.. hot here. We-especially I -are not used to that temperatures. So, in the end, it did NOTHING!!! Only lingering in the shades of the trees in my garden......and I hate to do nothing....

You call that hot? I am at the IPMS USA Nationals in Phoenix AZ, and it's 40-42 degrees outside. And then you get blasted with AC indoors. Fun fun fun.

There's different kinds of hot. My house isn't airconned and my bench is at window of the room. A south facing windows that is. This afternoon I was sanding some stuff and I felt some drops falling on my foot. I couldn't spot a leak in the ceiling and was a bit baffled. After a minute or so I realised I was sweating so hard, drops were falling from my chin on my foot
