Thanks for sharing these memories, Julian! Yeah, these were the times, when people just used, what was in the box or what they found at home. And the results were great - Murad's links prove that.

Yep, just finished reading a military modeller where a panzer IV was converted to a jagdpanzer.....because there was no kit! Now we are like :"oh that old dragon kit is lame" 0_o

I still have two of those old goodies laying about: "How to build dioramas" and "Building and painting Scale figures". Those were indeed the times! But thinking to that period were the modeller was the orphaned fosterchild, those books were also an invaluable help in finding new ways or even innovative techniques! The stuff you could do with an elastic band, a fine needle... or the replacement stuff, like "use this' to get 'that'. I remember vividly cutting pieces out of the 'flyscreen' then cutting it up in one-piece strands to make barbed wire ...

Drybrushing galore! I practically grew up gazing upon diorama books of Paine and Verlinden, works and techniques of these and many other gentleman of their time do have a soft spot in me heart no matter what the new word on the street is (drybrushing is old news haven't you heard?!). Road to Damascus' never gonna get old for me and I bet my hat on it who ever came up with that B$ just to sell his own books and products did grow up reading these same books too which probably made em a 'master modeller' in the first place...HAH

Oh the memories of a long distant childhood. I must have built most of the Tamiya stuff, inspired by the likes of Verlinden and Shep Paine🙂

Album info

Thought I would post some old ads up from the seventies...the younger guys out there may appreciate this "golden age" of modelling more and us older ones may get a kick out of the nostalgia! Enjoy...
