Funny thing. After I received the kit for christmas, I started reading about it and how much aftermarket and PE it was going to need to bring it up to a passable Gato. I was looking at Gato pictures on the internet, as my usual research goes, and I ran across a picture of the sideways launching. As I investigated more I noticed that the launched ships were missing most if not all of the items which were in error. So the more I thought about it the more wanted to do it and at the same time avoid the extra expense of all that AM and PE. I picked the Puffer simply because it was launched in Nov 42 and would have a similar conning tower as the kit represented in 1941. It wasn't until I was well into creating the base that I noticed that I would have considerable work to do removing the deck, installing cross members and working on the pressure hull.
It was a fun project and allowed me to improve my water making technique.

Thanks for the detailed description Steve, it doesn't make your job any less impressive though😉
What interests me the most is - how did you make the flags?

awesome diorama & setting. Love how you managed to express the "water splashing moment" at the U-boat's christening and the wooden support beams jumping up. Extremely well done!!!! well deserved congrats.

Thanks again guys.
Lukasz,The flags were made by downloading the picture of US flags and pennants and sizing them to the proper scale. I printed them out on an inkjet printer whose ink does not run with water (HP's ink doesn't run for instance). I cut them out and applied them with a mix of white glue and water. When they started to harden I used a pair of tweezers to twist and bend them.

As a Former Submariner, this is one of the finest dioramas of a Gato boat I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing this.
