Porsche 911 Turbo

Started work on the Porsche while I wait for my kids to come back from their grandparents on the other coast. I sanded the ridge/seam off the drivers head light contour and sent it to the spray booth for primer. I primed it in Tamiya white but could still see the ridge/seam so I sanded it down again and hit it with primer. Now it's super smooth and ready for body color. The chassis was primed in black because I wanted the inner fenders to be black. I did mask off the areas that are suppose to be body color and hit them with the green I intend to spray the body with. I know the shades won't come out perfect but this will allow me to use less of a wash to dirty up the bottom. I hand painted part of the suspension parts. I don't have Semi gloss black so they will all be painted in X-2 🤔hrugs: I am still trying to figure out what i want to do with the interior. :-/ I might use my black primer to spray it but i really want to have a brown leather interior. I gotta experiment with that more first before I commit. It's a lot of area to brush paint. I might go look for a rattle can that is close in color at the hardware store. More to follow this coming weekend.

Ultimately it's time to get an airbrush.

Looks like great work! Airbrushes are a ton of fun. If you can do it, I'd totally recommend it. Fine needles really allow you to do a ton of detail work and even some weathering techniques.

As soon as I got home from work today I got my spray booth ready to start laying down paint on my body. I was really excited to make some progress on the Porsche today. I laid down a tack coat and after, blew my nose to find a green mess in there! PSA---- WEAR BREATHING PROTECTION---- Right, after I found my PBE I laid down another coat of green this time medium+. I could see that the paint was going on very very even and starting to look great. Once that coat had set I put down my last coat and put it on pretty heavy. I noticed one little dust mote and I was able to pull it out with my tweezers. For good measure, I put a light mist down over that area. I plan on LIGHTLY sanding with 3000 grit tomorrow after the paint has cured. Let me tell you... I am VERY happy with the color. It's unusual but looks great!

While the paint was drying I started to detail up the bottom of the car. I found these great photos and used them as a loose guide.
One thing that is missing from the model is the goldish (I assume its the) throttle actuator. My modeling skill is still too low to figure a way to fabricate one of those but maybe I will down the road. I just need to get some styrene. Anyways the first thing I noticed is that in those photos the exhaust manifold looks like a bluish silver/white, the muffler is a silvery-gold, and most of the bolt heads are golden. Also, the exhaust tips were they bluish silver/white too but that wasn't to my taste.
I made that bluish color using Flat Aluminum, White, and about 2 drops of Ford Engine Blue. It was all I had. I think it came out darn close! For the muffler, I used Flat Aluminum and about 5 drops of Gold Leaf.

Once I got all the parts together I wanted to dirty up the bottom a bit. I have some of Tamiya's black panel line accent but I haven't figured out how to use it with great results yet. One thing I have noticed though, is that when I clean my brushes with water, the water is tinted. This tinted water will dry on dark... I made a wash with some black and some water. I brushed it on pretty heavy and would wipe the excess with a paper towel. Rinse and Repeat until I got the desired effect I was looking for.
Now about the wheels. Let me start by saying I REALLY wanted gold wheels.
I tried for about an hour to make a mask for the inside of the wheels and finally kind of got one. I used a little masking tape, a little aluminum foil, a bit more masking tape and after fighting with it for a bit thought, I would try spraying the inside with black. Again I really wanted gold but don't have a gold spray can. With one wheel masked up, I took it to the booth. One mist coat and one medium coat and about 25 minutes to dry and I pulled the mask away. DISASTER! It looked horrible; it wasn't centered, there was a ton of overspray and the color wasn't great. I put some thinner on a cotton bud and started diligently trying to remove the paint... no luck. I pulled out the big guns, rubbing alcohol... no luck. I pulled out a toothpick and tried picking at it and viola! it started to come off. I wasn't able to get 100% of it clear and wasn't sure what to do next. On a whim, I took my Gold Leaf paint and just painted over it. The results were not half bad. I started in on the others and after about 3 coats it looked pretty good. I had to do very light coats so I didn't lose any of the detail of the Porsche logo in the center. Once they were dry I used a toothpick to make the lug nuts black.
Overall I am really pleased with how this is turning out.

After much deliberation, I decided on a black interior :-? But an airbrush is on order! I painted the steering wheel and little bits flat black while the dash and the seats are semi-gloss black.

I finally stopped for the night because I was working on the wrap around taillight assembly and having a hell of a time getting the black "rubber" seal around the outside without getting a smudge on the inside. Also, I don't think I have the skill yet to make the "P O R S C H E" lettering in black like the 1:1. Maybe I will paint the red part and then go over the raised part with a felt marker.

Then I have the window rubbers and I have NOT A CLUE how I am going to get those done up right. I watched Paul's video but the instructions show the glass having some parts painted black. Without window masks I am in for some trouble. I will ponder that next.

PS. I promise to get better light on the bottom so you can see the colors of the manifold and such better. The color temp is way off with my mix of incandescen, florescent and LED in my workspace.

Ha, I saw the last photo and thought "Wow, that's amazing!" and then realized it was a reference pic!

I've tried using Tamiya's paneling accent as a wash for the underside of my mini and it was not terrible but not great either. My main goal for this year is to learn how to weather well.

Definitely get an airbrush. It's has a learning curve and can be fiddly but so worth it.

The car is looking great!

Alexander- yes I plan on doing (trying) Tamiya TS-13 and putting a coat of polish on it.

Tom- I think it's because I need to clear coat it to work right. My next project I want to weather quite a bit so I gotta learn fast. Amazon had the Badger Patriot 105 on sale! It should be here by the end of the month (not sure what that's all about) but with a few gift cards I had it cost me $1.66 lolololol Now I just have to get a regulator, water trap, and hosing for my air compress to make it work. Plus Airbrush cleaner.

Chris- Thanks! Every time I see one of the new ones in Lizard Green (online) I think how much I love that color. This was the closest I could get.

So I learned where my limitations are. I will keep working and see what happens with the next. Airbrush will be here at the end of the month *devilish grin*

Thanks Chris. The body (green) was painted with a rattle can, the rest was brushed. I am not happy with some parts of it but like I said I enjoyed myself. 🙂. I actually started this kit on about 1/28. I had work in between, away as you know, but yeah it was a fast build. I spent more time waiting for paint to dry than I did building. LOL. I think its about 25 pieces? The Ford GT has taken much longer but it also is more than double the number of parts. Also, my wife and kids are out of town... I have had a lot of free time LOL
