Tamiya 6 cylinder 250cc Rc-166 Motogp motorcycle.
My favorite bike.
Stacked like waffels. 7 layers actually.
The ejector pin marks will never be seen.
These copper wires were to stop fuel leaking from the feed lines. This is my attempt to replicate them.
All the paint worn off due to handling will be refreshed.
Just to show that the wire is real. hahahahahahaha
I fill the clear tubing to colour the tube for when I place the oil feed line on the sump. Drained just before attachment.
I am yet to figure out where I can find the space to fit four 'return' springs. (The little springs that shut the slides inside the carburetor throats).
I am trying to reduce how much I handle the motor, as the paint is easily worn away and will need refreshing.
Only in close up is where one sees the crap that you forget to remove. like on the side of the fuel bowl and where the bowls are attached to the main set of carburetors.
But overall. I am most happy with what I have achieved.
Even the clear red on the venturi throats will need a touch up.
One glaring mistake is that I failed to drill the outlet of the oil return valve.
The detail that this kit has to begin with is daunting. Making the extra detail so worth including. No over kill here........impossible.
Nothing left untouched, as judges have exray vision. 🙁
I am leaving the cam cover ends off until I shut it up, otherwise all the paint would be worn away from all the handling.
Would you believe there are twelve steel plates in this clutch assembly. !!! AND, on the real machine the bolts you see protruding from the assembly are all drilled for the attachment of tie wire to prevent them from falling out if they become loose. !!!
If ever there was a way to get a modeller frustrated is to tell him or her to "Go spoke some wheels." But the instructions are perfect and following them is no drama. Note the small magnet attached to the tip of the white rod.
You start with the first set and work up to the full build like laying up a stack of pancakes.
The magnet on the stick is advised, as this prevents parts flying off into the never never if you squeeze too hard with the tweezers. and you have a greater degree of control over ALL parts.
The way to see if you have done it right is that all spokes criss cross in sets of four.
2006 is when this kit was first released. Pretty good for an 'old' style kit.
Still yet to finish the front wheel. But these took only a couple of hours to complete. Really easy to do and I lost NO parts at all. 🙂
These have since been painted and the remaining copper tabs have been added.
A bit rough, but it will all be cleaned up and tidied up with some gentle prodding and pushing to get the wire in a more uniform state.
Historically. These units were always coming loose due to the high frequency vibration of the 20,000 rpm they ran at and like the aero engines, anything that moved was secured with tie wires.
The attachment points are quite visible here and before they are removed on the oil stone.
All remaining burs have been removed, leaving a smooth edge to the whole chain.
The tank will now be polished and sealed under a coat of clear gloss.
Again. A polish to bring the surface up to a brilliant finish and then sealed with clear gloss.
The covers that fit on the ends of the valve covers have been left off until the very last second, otherwise, the paint would get worn off from the handling.
All the specks of fluff and dust will be removed once the build is totally finished. I will not be installing the fairing as it is a workshop situation am creating.
The wire used on the hand grips is to prevent the grips from sliding off when the riding gets really physical and the riders really 'handle' the bikes.
It's starting to look like the real thing now. 🙂
If it wasn't for all the wire used to hold things in place, these bikeds would have fallen apart on the track, such was the high frequency vibrations created at 20.000 RPM. !
The amount of work I did on the second Rc-166 is a thousand percent better and a lot more detail.
The 'Work bench' is an exact copy of the type Honda had at the Isle of Man TT. 1965
So ends my collection of the famous Rc-166.
A 'workshop' diorama is on the cards. But this is where it ends. FINISHED.

This build is the culmination of all I DIDN'T do on the last two. 👍
All ready I have done a dozen things never done before and all ready I feel this will be the ultimate.
Ordered the macro black tubing for the brake and speedo cable that is more to scale.
And the copper wire on the carburetors is the thinnest I can find.
And drills that are down to .003 for the nuts heads on the clutch so I can tie wire them.
😉 👍

I hope you have all liquids off the bench Kez, I don't want any mishaps on this one please. You are building the most influential machine in motorcycle racing history!

Peter, The bench is devoid of ALL fluids, with the space cleared of all un necessary materials except tools. 👍
Right now, I am trying to remember how I spoked the rims last time, as it seemed so easy back then, but right now, it's a cluster f*^k and I am confused.
No doubt, it will come to me again, as I do remember NOT using the jig last time.
Did you like the tie wires on the carbs. ? 🙂 🙂 🙂

Oh YES! Looking forward to more little detailed surprises to blow me away! Public Holiday here today for the Clermont Show. Will spend the morning clearing the debris off the bench so I have space for the chain challenge and final assembly. You would have had to use a jig to lace the rims mate.

I am delighted to tell you, it is finally assembled, all at 2.30 this morning it came to me how I did it last time, and with the help of Mr CA, it just grew. 👍 🙂 hehehehehehe.
And for you and your chain. Good luck with that one mate. 👍

That is exactly what I see in your work Lode. 🙂 👍
But thank you for your most kind words. 👍
I have a whole lot of drilling on the bolt heads on the clutch so I can use the fine copper wire as tie wires. 😉 , and that will be with an .003 drill bit. (As thin as a hair almost, and so easy to break. 😉

Ladies and Gents, this is an example of masterful modelling. I am very happy with my current build, it's as good as I can do so I am as proud as punch of it. This however is at a level I would most sincerely love to achieve. "What separates the men from the boys" so to speak. I had an hour long chat with Yoda yesterday about the Honda depicted above. I ran out of superlatives. I had some great ideas for displaying the model but, he already had that planned exactly as I described. Nothing escapes this man. I love the fact he is ALWAYS one step ahead of me but so encouraging and selfless I think he would love to see my builds at his level, (Insert Me Too moment here) and at a competition and would genuinely be tickled pink if my build beat his. (As if)! When I talk to Kerry on the phone about modelling, mine or his, his excitement is infectious, you are drawn into the abyss of excitement and euphoria. Kerry Cox my fellow modellers is, a true Master.

My good friend Peter has a way of waxing lyrical. 🙂 👍
And the fact of the matter is that it is Peters work that gets me all fired up, seeing how much he has mastered his hobby and how willing he is to take on board those tips and suggestions from all of us, all while remaining humble and full of wonder at all his piers and their abilities.
But I do say thank you Peter for all your praise and words of total support. They really make a difference. 🙂 👍

I am in the middle of some chain assembly and what a tangled web it is. ! :-O
Especially all the little burrs left from where the parts are separated from the main holding board.
As for Yoda. He wants to remain anonymous. 🙂

I have just run into a problem in that the snap clip links are not always noted for 'snapping back' and some times, one has to encourage them and remind them of their job. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Now I know my calling. 🙂
To be a watch maker / repairer. hehehehehe

I thought I had 'lost' it there at one stage, having a snap link fail three links in from the end, and consequently, I had to re position all the chain back in the jig and start from new. Well, ! rollers and pins all over the shop, but then suddenly it just seemed to mend it's self and all I had left was the final link to join both ends. 🙂 👍
I am extremely happy with the work I am getting done, and now I hope to work out the latch system for the fuel tank cap. !
The clutch tie wires were a bit of a challenge, but it came out as well as I expected. 🙂
Working on replacing every visible rivet, and putting rivets in that are not obvious, but you will see that as it gets done. 😉
Cheers buddy. 🙂 👍

Kerry, I think you have been way off the mark with the "chalk and cheese" remark. It's more of a comparison of an excellent build with a beautiful work of art. I am reeling with disbelief with what you have accomplished. I consider having my builds on the same web site as the Master who created this masterpiece as an honor! Thank you so much for the lessons!! I will be back for more!!

I've been watching this for some time but kept my mouth shut/keyboard locked, because I seriously lack in the "knowing anything about bikes" department... The amount of details to look at is just staggering, I particularly (but not exclusively) admire the transparent hoses... 👍

Daniel, there are two bikes that give me goose bumps when I hear them. Those being the Triumph and BSA triples of the 70/80's and of course, the six cylinder Rc-166.

This is my third build of this iconic little machine that put honda on the world map as a producer of multi cylinder motorcycles.
This build will incorporate all the extra add on bits produced by Tamiya. Front forks, clutch, spoked wheels and rims, and drive chain, finished off with the rivet set for the fairing and seat.
