Mocking up the layout
Carved foam with a knife and roughed up using a wire brush
Acrylic mud gave me a great starting texture
Added some variation with ballast. Definitely used too much here
Mixed up some polyfilla, PVA and dirt to make a paste to blend the barn in
Barn was pushed in (protected with cling film) to give an impression in the paste
Back was lined up carefully. The edges of the base were lines with card like the barn
Went back over a lot of the ballast with acrylic mud

Placed the barn on and felt the base had become too dark
Barn was glued on with PVA, and cocktail sticks pushed in from underneath to add strength
Join was sanded back and filled

Had to repaint a lot of the weathering, but I'm pleased with the result
Had a hiatus and when I came back was unhappy with the track texture and couldn't make track impressions, so went over it again with acrylic mud

Barrel was painted rust colour then with chipping fluid
The barrel after chipping fluid was used, so happy with this especially after more work with oils etc

Used acrylic mud to blend the scatter into the base, then used a wet brush to feather it out at the edges
Beer bottles for scatter. Decals for propellers were used as labels

A rural track running past a barn with some scatter. This took a long time as well, but planning helped a ton. My main issues were getting the colours and textures right for the track, and incorporating the grass
