Fw-190 d-12 HobbyBoss
This kit is something new for me I don't have much experience with german planes and this will be my fist german plane with an Airbrush. I also don't have any experience with Photo Edge parts and this kit has some although I didn't realise that when I bought this in the United States back in 2015. So we will see what I can do with this. I primed the cockpit black and gave everything a layer of dark gray. I detail painted everything with revell aqua paints. I also gave everything a wash with Ammo Dark Night wash. Also some chipping with silver.
The cockpit will be displayed open so I needed to make some seatbelts. The PE parts don't included those so I made some with masking tape and styrine sheet. The control stick is finished in the same way as the cockpit tub. But I added a light gray drybrush.
Fist PE parts are attached. I going alright till now. The added detail is nice.
Finished cockpit. I added a some oil weathering to the area of the pilots feet and a light gray drybrush. I also made a mistake here by glueing the seat inplace. The intructions say that you need to do that at this stage but you can't atach the large PE part behind the cockpit if you do that now. So leave te seat removeable untill you got all the cockpit parts inplace.
The decals are nor be best in this kit. They break esealy and are hard to move around. I had much problems on the lower intrument panel but I could fix most problems with some paint. I would suggest to cut them in to smaller piece for a better fit and less change to break them. But I'm decently happy with the result.
Parts of the engine bay can be seen trough the gear bay so This buokhead needs some paint. I primed everyting black and airbrushed RLM02 to the bulkhead part. the rest is painted with revell paints and everything has a AMMO Dark Night wash applied to it. The colours are not historical but you can barely see it and it alsways nice painting practise on paarts like these.
The internal parts are painted dark gray and RLM02 with some Tamiya Buff to lighten it.
This is the biggest Photo ected part and needs to be placed behind de seat when the two fuselage halfs are put together. I didn't feel like masking the cockpit so I painted it seperately. I also bended the part before painting. I used the same painting steps as for the cockpit.
The cockit and engine parts are placed the same way as in the easy assembly kit. This makes these steps very easy I really like that. This is also probably my best cockpit yet. Really happy with the result even with the decal problems.
The PE part behind the seat is added. As you can see I had to remove the seat to place it but the fit is very good, I used some PVA glue to attach becahse it was already a tight fit even without glue. I also painted the leather strap above the intrument panel.
I pained some more internal parts.
The gearbay fit was decent.
I needed to sand material away form the area's highlighted in red. The upper wings would not fit otherwise.
The last PE parts are added. My experience with them is Ok I still need more time with them but I do like the detail they can add. Especially the mesh detail on the turbo air intake. You can also see that the wing to fuselage fit is not very good.
I added all the control surfaces and the fit on the main wings is bad. I should have sanded the gear bay even more. but I filled the gaps and it looks accepteble now. The right side ws much worse then the left.
I used the protective foam material that protects the transparent parts to mask the wheel bays. I hope this works. I used liquid mask to fill in some gaps and keep it in place.
The windshield is attached and I masked the cockpit area. I will display this one with the cockpit open so I leave the canopy off for easy painting.
First the interior colour to make sure it's visible even after the camouflage scheme.
black primer for most of the pieces.
Dry brush with dark aluminium to the engine intake before I mask it of for a coat of aluminium to try some chipping effects.
Most parts are preshaded with white or preparred for chipping. I added liquid mask with a sponge for the chipping after all the layers of camo.
After the liquid mask the plane was painted black again and preshaded with white on both the upper and lowers sides.
I finished the wheels. I painted them black and used light grey oil paint to make the rubber of the tire more clear. I also primed the prop parts and added light aluminium for some chipping of the nose cone.
First layer of paint is added rlm light blue.
I spryed a very dark green on the prop and after that I used a dry brush to chip the leading edge of the blades. I also removed the liquid mask to reveal the chipping on the nose cone.
I needed the paint the white strip at this moment because the other camo colours need to go on top. I also used a other tint of light blue to tint the rudder. I saw this on some art and reverence of the dora fw-190s and thought it looked cool.
The completed camo. I'm pretty happy. Everything is free handed and the mottle effect is not easy at all. But it sure looks different to everything I have done before.
the chipping with the liquid mask went great.
Very happy with this result. The engine cowling is still removeble, I only dry fitted it to line up the free hand camo scheme.
Decals are applied. They looks good till now. Not hard to apply aside from the white stripes on the wing and they conform well to the details.
Finished prop.
Ammo green wash for both the upper and under side.
The nose is added and unmasked. Most other pieces are also painted and weathered.
The exhaust is hand painted with vallejo burned iron and then given an wash with brown panel line wash form tamiya. I also re painted the cannon barrel after all the over sprey.
I used oil paints to dust up the scheme. I used white to fade the decals and to lighten some panels. burned umber on both the upper and lower side. And yellow oaker where the pilot and maintenace crew walks.
Streaking effects are added to the flaps with lamp black oil paint.
I used the air brush for the exhaust streaking. I mixed a red brown with black.
The masking of the canopy went great but I made a mistake during the constuction of the internal parts and unfortunately fogged a part of the canopy. I was really carefull but not enough in the end. All other peices are also added to the underside. The landing gear has decent detail and is not to hard to construct.
I painted the windsheild frame by hand. the fit of the canopy is great.
final details are added and painted.
I decided to add antenna wire form streched sprue. this one is not easy but I'm happy with the result.
Well thats it. Still a lot to learn but my first german scheme with a airbrush is finished. I'm happy with the result.
I always thought the fw-190d was much larger then most ww-2 fighters but that is not the case at all.

Nice looking camo' Vincent. I know what you mean about Luftwaffe camo' it took me ages to pluck up courage to freehand my A8.

Well I finished this one. I learned a lot and I'm happy with the result. But I made a mistake in the end and almost ruined the canopy. Not to bad for a first try at a german camo scheme and PE parts.

Thanks everyone. And I use that base for most pictures of ww2 planes. But it looks decent indeed.

After my p-51d HobbyBoss Easy assembly kit I Finally want to try this more complex kit form HobbyBoss. I had This for a Very Long time but I was discourised by the Complex camo scheme and Photo edged details. I like I now have enough experience to try the more challenging parts of this build. I will mostly build this straight form the box with minimal modifications planned.
Modifications:
- Some extra detail in engine area nothing special.
