The early 1980's modernisation of the 4 Iowa class Battleships to bring it back to modern standards and improve it's fighting capabilities for the modern era. This was the Phase I modernisation.
A more extensive modernisation plan was called when these ships would arrive for their more extensive refit, expected in the late 1980's early 1990's. plans were drawn up in 1982 one of the designs called for a hybrid battleship carrier with either ski jumps or angled flight decks aft for 12 AV-8B Harrier II's or similar sized helicopters.
